Ohio State won its eighth national championship in division 1-A/Football Bowl Subdivision history with their win over Oregon in the inaugural college football playoff championship.

That win moves Ohio State into a tie with Notre Dame for the most championships during the poll era (1936-present), the most commonly used cut-off for counting titles. Ohio State is also now just two behind Alabama.

Mark Few at Gonzaga never recruits high school AAs and year in and year out his basketball team is one of the top teams in the country. It’s all about coaching. Football or any other sport.

Ohio State let Alabama stay in it...they outplayed them big time, but the score didn’t show it. OSU dominated both Alabama and Oregon—with their 3rd string QB!

Alabama played a soft SEC schedule...they need to play some better teams for the Big 10, Big 12, and Pac 12 so they can claim they played tough teams. The SEC stunk in bowl games this year. And they typically get to play teams that are 5-10 seeds below them in voting...and they still lost.

Without Kiffin, Alabama would have had 3 losses prior to the playoffs.

Your comments are the strangest I’ve read in a long time.
Ohio State opened the season and struggles to beat Navy.
They then lost to Virginia Tech. Then they played powerhouse Kent State and ran up the score 66-0. They then gave up 28 points to powerhouse Cincinnati. Then gave up 24 points to a not very good Maryland team. Then played a no-body in Rutgers, then beat a weak Penn State team by 7 points. So the first 6 out of 7 teams they played were pansies. Is there any wonder they were not highly thought of? They only got in the Final Four because they blew out Wisconsin in the Big 10 title game. The committee was looking for any reason to put them in the playoff. So they jumped over a TCU team that was rated higher than them and finished the season winning 59-0. Plus TCU played a tougher schedule. Ohio State played one of the easiest schedules in the country and struggled to beat no-bodies.

To say they let Alabama “stay in the game” is the dumbest remark I’ve ever read about college football. Coach Oscar Meyer’s trademark is blowing out teams when he gets the chance. TCU should have been playing in the title game, not Ohio State. Ohio State got in the Final Four because of name recognition and their huge fan base, nothing else.

And they dominated bama and Oregon so it looks like they were the best team by far this year. Oh and they win with their 3rd string QB.

They damn sure didn’t dominate Alabama. Since when is a 7 point win, with the losing team having a chance to win the game on the last play a blowout? Ohio State lost that game because Blake Sims finally had a bad game.Even with Elliot running crazy Alabama almost won it. And they have the top recruiting class coming in this year. If Ohio State wants to stay in the big time Oscar Meyer needs to quit playing no-bodies in the non-conference. That’s why they got in the play-offs on a hope and prayer. Tough teams play tough teams, not Navy, Rutgers, Cincinatti, Kent State, and Virginia Tech.

On its site, the NCAA doesn’t recognize USC as the champion for 1928 and 1939, although we claim the title for both years.

There’s no doubt Meyer is a great coach. One of the greatest. But it’s not like he started out with a high school team and took them the championship in two years. Tressel left him a very talented bunch of players. The only limitations on him were the number of scholarships. And that’s no different than another team whose coach can’t recruit or evaluate.

I'm not a huge fan of his, or OSU, but his coaching most certainly DID show up over the course of the year. Managing a team that lost not one, but TWO, top QBs during the season... that takes skill. Keeping them on a pace to dominate all of college football during those trials and tribulations takes talent, too. Finally, their one loss, getting squished early in the year to Va Tech (gave up 7 sacks, O-line couldn't do anything right, their 3rd loss in 4 games after winning 29 straight, happened at home, 3 INTs with one returned for a TD, likely costing them a chance at a title shot, most experts writing them off for the season, etc etc etc)... getting past THAT, and coaching up that O-line to dominate for the rest of the year, most certainly DOES show coaching the excellent talent that he was handed.

LOL, really? I can see that you know the final score, but were you watching the game? OSU had a kid who had started ONE college game ever at QB... and even so, they:
outgained Bama per rush (6.7 ypc),
outgained Bama per pass (7.1 ypa),
won the turnover battle (3 INTs against the new kid's one),
won on time of possession, and, oh yeah,
won on the scoreboard.

But even more indicative of the dominance was the 3rd down conversions and drives...
Bama was 2-of-13 (15.3%), OSU went 10-of-18 (55.5%).
OSU had 3 drives of more than 8 plays. Bama none.
OSU had 3 drives (not the same 3) of over 4 minutes. Bama had none.
Bama had 8 drives of 12 yards of less. OSU had 4.

At one point early in the 3rd Qtr, Bama was being outgained 443 to 160.

Bama only won in two statistical categories for the entire game: kick return average (thanks to a single 36 yd return), and punting... the Bama punter was a freaking hero all game long... but when your punter is your best player, with a national title shot on the line... you got your butt kicked.

42-35, with the losing team being one catch away from winning the game on the final play. Give it up. Stats don’t win games, the score does.

They went into the Big Ten championship game against Wisconsin as the underdog ... and they won that game by a score of 59-0.

Obviously the selection committee weighted very heavily the late-season play. It's been said that in college football it is often more important how you finish the season than how you start, and this is an example.

The Wisconsin game was one of total domination and if you look at the stats and some of the replays you will see that. Everything clicked, passing, running, defense, special teams, whatever. You might see that kind of performance once in every hundred games you played, and done with a QB who had never started a game before for the team. It was obvious this was a team that was peaking at the end of the season and those are the kind of teams you want to see in playoffs and bowl games.

True, stats don't win games, but your assertion was that Bama did not get dominated. It was 443 to 160 in yards early in the 4th... it was a 40 difference in 3rd down conversions... so yeah, they were getting dominated.

Had the two OSU heroes not had one early giveaway each, Bama would have been behind by 28. But yes, The Tide got two nice desperation scores late to make it look closer than it was. I'm glad that helps you sleep at night. ROFL!

OSU's season turned around when they beat #7 Michigan State on the road in early November. They never looked back after that.

The playoff system doesn't really fix anything in NCAA football, because you're always going to have a situation where a #5 team doesn't even get a chance to play for the title when (in retrospect) it looks like they would have been better than one of the top four.

In this case it's not OSU at #4 that didn't belong in the playoffs. It was #2 Florida State.

Right. Keep in mind that the playoff is to determine the national champion. If the late-season momentum of a team is disregarded, then there’s a damn good chance that you end up with a team out of the playoffs even though it would have beaten any of the four playoff teams handily.

It's a goofy mess of claims. I'll claim I don't know the true number, except to say that I've seen Alabamans claim more than 14, which is BS.

cheers.
