California farmers struggling with drought say a U.S. Supreme Court decision issued Monday that keeps strict water restrictions in place to protect a tiny, threatened fish has forced them to leave thousands of acres unplanted in the nation’s most fertile agricultural region.

The justices rejected appeals from farmers in California's Central Valley and urban water districts who had challenged a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan to safeguard the 3-inch-long Delta smelt, a species listed as threatened in 1993 under the federal Endangered Species Act.

The smelt only lives in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the largest estuary on the West Coast that supplies much of California with drinking water and irrigates 4.5 million acres of farmland. Farmers contend that vast amounts of water sent into the ocean under the smelt regulations have made the three-year drought worse for them.

Odds areva smelt has nothing to do with it. It’s an attempt to drive farmers off the land.

court decision is simply nothing more than political maneuvering to help the democrat governor Moonbeam in his effort to build the peripheral pipe line in order to send delta water to the LA basin.

The farmers need to present the evidence of how much this hurts ILLEGAL alien laborers. Our overlords don’t care about the citizens or farmers but prove the illegals are hurt and things will change right quick.

We must win in 2016 no matter who is the nominee selection. We have to quit the childlike crap. So much is needed to reverse things like saving a stupid little fish. How damn dumb. Rotten communists are destroying a strong America for a damn fish?

Bankrupt the farmers and then the government buys the land.

You are exactly right. The delta smelt is a red herring. If we had a huge surplus of water and a surplus of smelt, they would find another reason to dump it in the bay. It is all about controlling the farmers and the land.

The delta smelt is an introduced fish and is therefore non-native to the Sacramento delta and tributaries, yet it somehow conveniently qualified as ‘endangered’ to crush central valley agriculture like a bug.

It’s part of the long term North America Plan. Agriculture is not going to be in CA’s future.

Odds are (the) smelt has nothing to do with it. It’s an attempt to drive farmers off the land.

No, it's an attempt by the Democrats to justify a $100 billion Delta tunnel project followed by the construction of a third 'conveyance' to send more water to Los Angeles.
