Top Gear Russia magazine accidentally published an image of a secret Russian submarine.

The Russian edition of the automobile magazine published a photo of the classified "AC-12 Project," a nuclear deep-water submarine, nicknamed "Losharik" after a children's movie.

This was first reported by the unofficial blog of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies and picked up by Slon Media, which reached out to an expert for commentary.

Still a great film after all these years. Almost as good as Down Periscope.

This boat is not secret. It's an old boat that was rebuilt to be a carrier for the secret boat. The secret boat is carried under this one, and it is built for deep dives (up to 6000 meters, reportedly.) It is powered by a small nuclear reactor. There is absolutely nothing to see in this photo, as the top of the carrier is of no interest. You can't even tell if the secret sub was carried at that time (probably not - shallow water near the shore.)

Traditionally, submariners are a secretive bunch, and they would know better than to remain on the surface in day time near the shore if their boat represents any kind of secret. The entire deep-dive system doesn't even have much military use; it was used for geological purposes. Perhaps you could cut or intercept some cables with it, but modern encryption makes it not very valuable. The most valuable use of this sub, as far as I can think, is to discover all the sunken spanish ships and collect all the gold.
