But he was the nominee only twice, and won both times.
Nixon was the nominee and lost in 1960 then won in '68. Mitt was the nominee in 2012 and lost, to win in 2016 would go against historical precedence.

When Reagan won the GOP nomination, he won 44 states and defeated Carter.
When Romney won the GOP nomination, he lost to Jimmy Carter’s second term, an election that republicans couldn’t lose.
