Washington, DC – Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell today issued a Secretarial Order calling for a comprehensive science-based strategy to address the more frequent and intense wildfires that are damaging vital sagebrush landscapes and productive rangelands, particularly in the Great Basin region of Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Oregon and California.
The strategy will begin to be implemented during the 2015 fire season. Goals include reducing the size, severity and cost of rangeland fires, addressing the spread of cheatgrass and other invasive species, and positioning wildland fire management resources for more effective rangeland fire response.
“Targeted action is urgently needed to conserve habitat for the greater sage-grouse and other wildlife in the Great Basin, as well as to maintain ranching and recreation economies that depend on sagebrush landscapes,” said Secretary Jewell

One change suggested there by Neil Kornze, director of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, was to put the protection of rangeland resources ahead of property. The protection of human life would remain the top priority.
“If we were to flip the bottom two, it would change a lot, and it would be hard,” Kornze said in closing remarks at the conference. “It would be hard to explain that to some of our urban and mixed-landscape firefighting partners.”

Just where are these "fire management resources" going to be positioned? I live in the Great Basin and it is a huge, vast, and mostly very remote area. The "middle of nowhere" doesn't begin to describe it. Are fire crews and water trucks going to be "positioned" in the middle of nowhere in case a fire breaks out?
We need to supply different food for sage grouse. They taste too strong of sage when that’s their main diet.
This will be the basis of the elimination of grazing.
Reminds me to mail my completed grazing lease, cows keep the cheatgrass down!

Well, they're batting .500 with their lies. Yes, the accelerated invasion of cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) is a huge problem in the Great Basin. After a fire on the sagebrush steppe, it is the first colonizer, and "cheats" the soil of moisture that would encourage the regrowth of sagebrush and other dominants. The spread of cheatgrass is detrimental to all native animals that depend on the sagebrush steppe, but, sadly, it's here to stay. It will not be eradicated! We have to intelligently manage these new "grasslands" now.
Juniperification (a real word) is also a problem, but a minor and more manageable one. It seems that native junipers and pinyon pines are spreading from the mountainsides into the sagebrush valleys,thereby causing "islands" and "pockets" of sagebrush, rather than huge, unbroken swaths of it. This is detrimental to species, such as the sage-grouse, that require more than just "pockets" of sagebrush to thrive. But as we speak, crews are working all over the Great Basin cutting down and removing junipers from these valleys. Time will tell if this strategy works.
As for drought, all these animals are well adapted to survive. And finally, as for climate change, well... hahahahahahahaha!

Exactly. It's like wishing to prevent a huge city from burning down and utilizing only one fire truck. People just don't realize how vast and remote the Great Basin is.
Plus, the lightning-strike fires are usually in the mountain ranges. The fire that struck the Pine Nut Range (just southeast of Carson City) was devastating. It took weeks to finally put it out, and now the Pine Nuts look like a war zone. And, yes, the cheatgrass is now advancing.
Good luck trying to put out these naturally occurring fires.
OMG, Sally Jewell sounds like a one person solution to the problem of wildfires that endanger many species with her “new” approach of putting protection of environment before property. /sarc
At least she doesn’t suggest putting it before the loss of life.
Agenda 21s goal of getting business, industry and people off public and rural private lands couldn’t have a better friend than Jewell.
That is their problem. The more of this land they remove from use the more problem they have. You’re not going to have those wide open prairies without grazing. They will just grow up into big brush patches.
Exactly...The most devasting wildland fires I've seen in Eastern Oregon over a number of years have been naturally occuring. They're in remote, rough areas that are very difficult to get men and equipment in to fight them.
