(According to) to Justin Sink of the Hill, Cecilia Muñoz, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, declined to put a price tag on the plan during a conference call Thursday evening. Rather Muñoz said details of the plan will be in the president's next budget proposal.
However, the president's announcement said that the plan could benefit as many as nine million students who could save an average of $3,800 per year. This would put the total cost at a little more than $34 billion.
In a (video) accompanying the announcement, the president said that his plan would be "making two years of community college free for anyone who's willing to work for it." At $34 billion per year, taxpayers at least will be working for it, willing or not.

So Basically Public Education has failed big time. If we need to give community college for free to get students up to the 7th grade level, something must be wrong with K-12 Government Education.
What a joke.
Best evidence yet that public education is a failure.
Interesting and an important point.
The things Obama says and wants to do have nothing to do with need or reality but serve as vehicles.
This is a feint! This is being used to draw our attention away from the Islamic threats across the pond and other various sundry garbage going on in DC.
CC has become pricey here in SC.
If it is “free” to everyone, then it is certain to be free to the illegals. I believe this is one of the driving forces behind this ploy.
To deal with this kind of ‘populist’ pandering, you have to fight fire with fire. For every proposal, a counter proposal that neuters their support groups. So, in this instance the Republican response should be -
“No, we have a cheaper, economically feasible alternative that empowers students, allows them to work while going to school (if they need to and wish to), and doesn't require spending significantly more money on additional ‘bricks and mortar’, especially when so many inner city schools are in need of replacement or upgrading.”
“Our proposal is to expand and support online learning, with national testing to determine if you learned the material. By law, if the testing is passed, then ALL higher educational institutions in the country that receive ANY federal funding (including Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and every IVY that receives federal research dollars) have to accept the credits for those online courses - with the same value as their own in house courses - if that student decides to apply to that school for the remaining two years of a four year education.”
“In order to make this feasible, anyone who has genuine expertise in an area of study can post online material for the students to study, either for free or for payment. The site that the student learned the material from will not be considered. Only that they pass a comprehensive exam that demonstrates their knowledge and mastery of the material.”
I wished that was here in SC while I was in high school. It wasn’t until a few years later I found that the tech college would let HS people take classes.
Yeah, another promise of “free” stuff for nothing. They always promised we retired military folks a lot. But each year they continue to cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, you get the idea. Give illegals free stuff. Give deadbeats free stuff. Give the dimocrat base free stuff. Give the freeloaders free stuff. Who pays for all this “stuff”?????? The few that are truly out there trying to work for a living. All of us who did our jobs for 20+ years for the promise of certain things IF we did what we were suppose to do. We did. Then they cut our throats AFTER we are retired, time has been put in, and cannot do a danged thing about it after the fact. Stinking RINOcrat congress-scum don’t give a stinking damn.
Sweet, lets transform communty college into Cabrini Green
...as long as they promise not to take any of those silly economics courses...
Where are the jobs for all the new graduates coming from?
34 billion? Obama won’t EA this until he drives the cost up to 100 billion.
So Obama comes up with this plan just as Republicans take Congress majority. So the Republicans, if they vote this down, will be the bad guys and party of no free college money just in time for next Presidential election.
He didn’t attempt this when Harry Reid was in control, nope waits until Repubs are in the majority so it can have negative publicity during primaries and Presidential elections. They will beat this dead horse....ughhh
any program should require any student who takes fund for college that are free should be required to pay it back if they do not complete college. Seize their IRS refunds, levy bank accounts, be denied Welfare until paid.
One thing is certain, the fees charged by Community Colleges will become astronomical if the government starts paying the bills. Probably 5k per semester.
I think I’ll open a community college. Teach Bong making, rolling paper techniques, ammunition reloading, and beer can recycling.
You sign up at community college never go and the college will split the Fee with you ?
There’s ALREADY a plan for FREE college education.
It’s called the GI Bill. . .
You can always tell when the “chief” is in troubles....he stars shaking a new set of shiny beads, and saying “lookey here what I got for YOU!”
Squirrel!
