Roosevelt personally ordered that a passenger ship containing refugee Jews turn back to Europe where ultimately most of the Jews ended up in the concentration camps. In the fall of 1941, five minutes before Pearl Harbor, Harvard had the largest Nazi Club on-campus in the United States. I would not have believed it, but something sent me into the stacks one evening in 1969 and my eye fell on some bound original volumes of LIFE Magazine. I picked a couple up and thumbed through them (nobody ever read LIFE; it was "the magazine for people who can't read"), and I found two interesting stories, one about prewar New Deal inflation and the other about Harvard and the Nazis.
