Daniel M. Donovan Jr., the district attorney in the controversial police chokehold case on Staten Island, appears poised to run for the seat in Congress about to be vacated by Representative Michael G. Grimm, and may face several adversaries if he does.

Mr. Donovan, who impaneled the grand jury that cleared a police officer in the July death of Eric Garner, said in a statement on Tuesday that he was “very seriously considering the race.” But some other prominent Republicans and Democrats also expressed interest, either publicly or privately, in running for Mr. Grimm’s seat.

Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican assemblywoman who represents parts of Staten Island and Brooklyn, said that she was “seriously considering” seeking the seat. On the Democratic side, Mr. Grimm’s predecessor, Michael E. McMahon, said he was “definitely taking a look” at running.

Other potential candidates include Andrew Lanza, a Republican state senator, and Michael Cusick, a Democratic assemblyman, according to officials in both parties.

Excellent.

Hale, have you heard about Kane’s woes?

Hope she doesn’t pull a Budd Dwyer. :o

RE AG Kane:

Haha!! Yeah, I knew it was a matter of time before someone got the goods on this hack partisan lunatic.

My biggest concern about it DA Ferman going “Good ‘Ol Girl” Network” with it and letting her go.

We’ll see. Ferman is an “R”, and she SEEMS to be pretty good.

RE Budd Dwyer:

I remember that incident well. Was horrible. He had a wife and kids, and that video is still on the Internet, in all it’s horror.

People committing suicide don’t even think about the trauma they’re going to cause their families...

He should have had his day in court and faced the music like a Man, instead of doing what he did.

According to this, Ferman is running for Judge

http://touch.mcall.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-82478563/

Her rat assistant Kevin Steele is running for DA and she says he “has been an absolutely terrific first assistant and a great friend.”

I’m kinda surprised Montco still has a GOP DA, the article implies they may have never had a rat one. It would be a shame if this a**hole Steele were elected.

RE: Dwyer, yes that was very sad. Must have been quite shocking, imagine if something like that happened today...

IMHO, Nicole Malliotakis would the best candidate. She’s young enough to garner seniority and make the district securely Republican again and she could also be a conservative celebrity in the making.

I sense a lot of wishful thinking in that article. Make no mistake, the Democrats will be very competitive in the NY-19, even if a Green Party candidate runs (and the main reason why the Green got 11% in NY-21 was because the RAT nominee was some filmmaker with no political experience that was dragged out at the next-to-last minute when Congressman Owens abruptly retired).

That being said, John Faso should be favored to hold the seat for the GOP, and Pete Lopez and Steve McLaughlin should be fine as well (although Lopez would be better than McLaughlin because he represents more of the district).

After a DCCC poll showed him down 20 points (I don’t know why they released those poll results), Assemblyrat Michael Cusick has decided not to run!

Brooklyn Councilrat Vincent Gentile might be the rat favorite now.

Apart from state Senator Diane Savino (who won’t run), is there any Democrat that could win a special election against Donovan in that district?

It sounds like they have little expectation of victory.

DCCC: “We’ve always said that this district is very challenging for Democrats in a special election, but it is going to be competitive in November of 2016.”

Vincent Gentile has a master plan for victory, he now brands himself as “Vinnie”. His website is “Vinnie for Congress”.

According to Politics1.com and TheGreenPapers.com, conservative Republican John Faso has entered the contest to replace moderate (but pro-life) Republican Congressman Chris Gibson in NY-19. Faso has stong ties to the district (he served several terms in the state assembly for a seat centered in Columbia County and, if I’m not mistaken, wholly within the current lines of the NY-19), is experienced (not only did he serve in the assembly, he was the GOP minority leader), has good name ID and fundraising contacts (he was the GOP gubernatorial nominee in 2006), and is far more conservative than Chris Gibson without being out of touch with the district’s electorate.

The NY-19 is one of the least Republican in the nation to be represented currently by a Republican (Obama carried it 52.1% to 45.9%), so it won’t be an easy hold by any stretch, but John Faso may be our best possible candidate there. This is the first-tier candidate for whom I was hoping. Some other good candidates had been mentioned as potentially being interested, but I think that Faso’s announcement will clear the field for him on the GOP and Conservative Party sides (he likely will face a Democrat for the Independence Party nomination). I’m feeling pretty good about this seat now, and, if Faso gets elected, he will be a vast improvement in voting record over Chris Gibson.

Gibson. I’m glad he won and had a good voting record on Life issue. Endorsed by NRLC

but not genuinely pro-life

http://blog.timesunion.com/capitol/archives/162974/is-rep-chris-gibson-pro-choice-or-pro-life/

yea for Faso.
his supporters in Dutchess were bitter in 2009 when he was passed over and they refused to support TEdisco. some of them.

Given that this district sent the Conservative stalwart Gerry Solomon until 1999, I would hope it would send someone close to his stature again.

It was a very different district that elected Gerald Solomon; the current NY-19 includes half of Maurice Hinchey’s old NY-22.

I saw this yesterday. Great news.

In most states I’d expect to lose a seat like this if it was open in a POTUS year, but in NY local GOP candidates often run well ahead of the POTUS ticket, which is good cause they have to.

Regarding Faso’s old Assembly seat, looking on our campaigns, a little of it was in the current NY-20th CD as well.

I like Chris Gibson as a person, but he’s not nearly conservative enough for me.
