I went on a detachment out there in late July 1978, and when the door to the C130 we flew out on opened up, it was as if someone had turned on a giant hair dryer and was pointing it right up the ramp.

My best friend (buddy system) who got sent to California, came out on his motorcycle to visit me while I was out there, and it was so hot, all we did was stay in his motel room, drink, and just catch up with what was going on.

At one point, I wanted to run across the street to a Taco Bell (IIRC) so I opened the door, ran out into the road, got about a quarter way across, and my bare feet felt like they had burst into flames! Talk about stupid, I didn’t even think about it, but I can tell you, I ran back to my room and put my feet in the bathtub!

It sure does get hot out there in July!

I don’t know if this appropriate, but when we go to Yuma, we go to Das Bratwurst Haus, ( I think that is the one) in old downtown. Their schnitzel is amazingly tender. It’s better than at Arnold Schwarzenegger’s restaurant that was in Santa Monica.

Yesterday, I was filling up my gas tank ( $25. 78 to fill!) and I saw a woman with a Toyota 4X4 filling up six gas cars. I asked her if she was going off roading. She said she was and in Yuma. Such beautiful sand dunes around there coming into town.

There’s a story about how Arizona split up three institutions. Phoenix and Yuma won the first draws: they got the state seat and the prison. Tucson lost, and we ended up with the university.

Happy New Year’s all!

My old stompin grounds!

As Crash Fire Rescue [crew] we had a crash response area from the Mexican border to 75 miles North,East & West of the base, we also had the most heavy duty rescue gear in Yuma County & would get a lot of calls to assist the other fire dept.’s in the county & would help train other fire dept.’s in the manner of dealing with an aircraft crash & fire.

I cannot imagine what it is like for our troops over in the ME to wear full combat gear in that weather.

It is incomprehensible to me!

On August 9, 1963, we visited the base at the conclusion of a trip by kayak from Blythe, Calif. to Imperial Oasis, Ariz., which is nearby. I recall eating in the mess hall where a sign read, “take all you want, but eat all you take.” In the weather station, a spokesman noted the progress of Hurricane Arlene in the western Atlantic Ocean.

I'll have to try Das Bratwurst Haus next time I'm in Yuma. Over the decades, I have always eaten at Chretin's, a Mexican restaurant located in a residential area, but since they changed owners and moved into the business district, they have gotten mixed reviews on social media.

By the way, it used to be that when you crossed the Colorado River from California and stopped to eat at a Mexican restaurant, you would discover that burritos were called burros. From my experience, if you find a Mexican restaurant in Arizona that still refers to burritos as burros, the food should be good.

Hello! So nice to talk to you. Once you’ve tried Das Bratwurst Haus, you’ll wish they had a chain near you. There is something about doing things well and consistently, that I would say about them. I have never been to Germany or lived with a German community, but this time of year to February, I really want good German cooking with potatoes that are just right.

Off the top of my head, I know several restaurants in my beautiful AZ that have “burros” on the menu. One is in the old mining town of Globe and I get the green chile burro served enchilada style. I didn’t know, until you told me, that their was a language difference between the two states about burros and burritos, because I have been to restaurants in the Mexican side of town, where they have “burros, “ but wondered why they weren’t bigger than a burritos. In California, I like eating in the Mexican grocery stores that have a taqueria inside and having the tortillas fresh off the conveyer belt.

But the best homestyle Mexican food is Rigo’s on Oracle in NW Tucson. Their buffet has all these soft and deeply flavored stew-like dishes you won’t find anywhere else. It’s where we take out of towners.

Have a wonderful New Year, Fiji Hill, filled with warm hearts around your abundant table.
