You’re talking about the “Gimli Glider” incident. There were human passengers on board. Also, an auto race event was in progress — with plenty of vehicles and people on the abandoned airstrip used for the emergency landing. That certainly complicated things — it was a miracle no one was killed.
BTW, one of the reasons that Canada converted to metric was because we were led to believe that the U.S.A. was about to do so. Boy, did we get suckered on that one!
