CLEVER survival tactics by father Steven van Lonkhuyzen have emerged as the key to his family’s ultimate survival while trapped in the Australian outback for 10 days.

The father of two boys used a number of methods in an attempt to attract attention as the first pictures of their ordeal were released yesterday.

Mr van Lonkhuyzen used a large, plastic bowl to capture rainwater, a vital instrument in keeping him and his sons, Ethan, 7, and Timothy, 5, alive. By the time the missing trio were discovered, the water was reportedly “dangerously close to depletion”.

“They were very close to running out of food when they were found and they had nine litres of water with them in the car that were used up,” South West District Acting Superintendent Mick Bianci said.

“[Mr van Lonkhuyzen] mainly focused on trying to keep the two boys entertained, keep them fed, he did ration the food they did have, to make it last longer.”

Australia needed some good news this week. This is what we're getting.

The father sounds like he kept his head and did the right things.

And thank God for the farmer.

The beauty of always carrying plenty of supplies with you, is that when you realize that you are truly deeply stuck and not going to get out anytime soon, then you can relax and start doing what you need to do to get you out of it.

If he had been more mechanically oriented, then he could have spent that tens days digging out his car, and building himself a little road out of the mud.

Patience and just doing some boring drudge work should have allowed them to escape.

Having seen part of the Outback (years ago) it's easy to imagine that there are large parts that lack mobile phone service. But a satellite phone and a GPS that displays latitude and longitude might be a good idea.

No mention of a mother. Strange.

She’s around - just didn’t go on this trip. Luckily because she’s the one who raised the alarm when they were overdue.

He had a CB type radio. Only found out it wasn’t working when he tried to use it. Yes, he should have checked, but he did do a lot of the right things in preparing.
