...were shot when a suspect ambushed them... A "suspect" did not ambush them. Whoever fired the shots was NOT a "suspect". The shots were fired by the assassin/murder/hitman/shooter - whatever definite term you prefer, but definitely NOT the mushy term "suspect". That is even more mealy mouthed than the usual "accused".
