Richmond Police Officer Who Brought Home 4 Pounds of Marijuana Won't Be Charged (California)

A Richmond police officer who took 4 pounds of marijuana home instead of filing it in the department's evidence locker will not be charged with a crime, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's office.

Prosecutors said members of the Richmond Police Department learned in September that Officer Joe Avila had a large amount of marijuana at his house. At the request of the Police Department, the district attorney's office began investigating and searched Avila's home, where they found 4 pounds of marijuana.

Prosecutors said Avila had responded to a call at a delivery service company in November 2013 for a package containing marijuana. Rather than booking the marijuana in the department's evidence locker, he took it home and used it to train a department police dog, according to the district attorney's office.

I just hope it isn’t because of the crushing weight of the government.

Today, the cops seem to be everywhere, and it seems like we are being watched and controlled every second that we are outside of our home, and that every human interaction involves the law and government and being watched and measured.

It used to be that cops were few and far between and that we rarely thought about them, or the government, or an infinite number of tiny all encompassing law and regulation, we just lived.

Great idea: bust the dealer, take his four pounds of weed, then resell it and keep the money for yourself. Sounds like this Richmond cop is a budding drug dealer capitalist using the color of law. Amazingly, no one in authority sees anything wrong here. Sounds like the Richmond PD is a criminal enterprise to me.

Ah, the 1960’s, when hitchhikers would give you a handful of joints to thank you for the ride, or when you visited someone they wouldn’t let you leave without trying their stash. Anyway, I remember cops freely taking goods from friends when we got stopped, they dumped it in their patrol car trunk, and sent us on our way - we knew that no way were they going to turn it in to anyone.

In Dallas a Houston cop visited my brother in law, and those two best friends and me and my wife that the cop had a crush on, went out drinking, at one point he rousted a kid in a park and stole his joint, and then offered it to my wife and I, it was a pretty disgusting display and I can’t remember if he threw it out after we said no, or if he kept it.

By the way, before we had left the house, I asked the cop why he was taking eggs out of the refrigerator of my wife’s parents (we were all in our early 20s, except for my teen wife), he told me the eggs were for egging people.

That's something I haven't seen here! When I was a teen, I hung around with some boisterous kids in the Mission District of San Francisco. We would taunt cops, I remember one time they were in a diner we egged their patrol car, getting the front windshield real good. Nowadays, we'd probably get shot. Back in the 1960s they laughed it off and kidded us, and kept a rapport with us. We knew some of the cops were toting weed. Some of those kids that were the worst troublemakers admired the cops and became cops themselves.
