Move to Medicaid: Nearly 10M enrolled since Obamacare launch
CNBC ^ | December 19, 2014 | Dan Mangan

While enrollment on government-run Obamacare exchanges gets the bulk of media attention, sign-ups for Medicaid have been even greater, in no small part due to another part of the Affordable Care Act.

Since October 2013, enrollment in Medicaid and the related Children's Health Insurance Program had grown by about 9.7 million people as of this past October, according to data released Thursday by the federal government. That's 17 percent higher than what was the average monthly enrollment level seen from July through September 2013.

That bump brings total enrollment in the programs that provide coverage without a premium charge to the poor and young, respectively, up to 68.5 million people nationally. A bit more than half of those people are children....

This is just one reason that, IF Obolacare is repealed or shot down by SCOTUS, we WILL go from Obolacare right into a single payer system. It’ll be the ‘quick and easy’ answer that’s gonna fill the void left by Obolacare.

Obamacare will come right out of your paycheck like SS & Medicare....And as usual, only working people will pay.

So, we're back to where we were...only working folks pay....everyone else get a freebie...and we've screwed up a whole health system and insurance system.

Medicare and Medicaid are single payer systems now. Nine out of every 10 Medicare recipients pay for supplementary insurance (Medigap).

That was the goal from the beginning. Obolacare was NEVER about covering the uninsured it was about wanting to institute single payer, knowing that would never happen without a 'go-between', transitional program. Thus, Obolacare. Watch. It's coming.

I’m already in a single payer system. You won’t like it.

The VA, too, and we all know how successful that is. Next up is your employer sponsored coverage. Private insurance is going to be a thing of the past real soon.

Why not? We have a Central Bank that can print all the money it needs via monetized debt, and push interest rates to zero - all to fund the progressive social-engineering schemes of government.

As long as the Fed exists, conservatives should be prepared to watch progressive government take over pretty much everything.

A couple more years and we’ll all qualify for Medicaid, Cuba style.

That’s why it was called Medicaid expansion.

And it has indeed expanded.

It was done by greatly relaxing the eligibility requirements to get into Medicaid, which used to be quite strict. Now you can get on Medicaid if you have a low income with no asset test. You can own property, even several houses and as long as your income is below a certain threshold you are eligible.

This is by design.

If you sign up for Medicaid, your assets are subject to reclamation upon your death (or in some cases before). This is a means to relieve elderly and poor people of any assets they may have acquired through hard work before they became ‘poor’ by the government’s standards.

"assets are subject to reclamation upon your death"

If a senor burns thru his money before he dies, and has to go onto Medicaid, most usually because of the need/cost of going into a nursing home, Medicaid requires the assets before the transition. In fact, Medicaid does a 5 year look back at the individual's finances to see if he tried to shelter it or hide it or give it to a heir.

There have always been rumors about affluent people who sheltered their assets prior to the 5 year look back period that then are able go on to Medicaid even though they have these hidden assets or the assets were given to an heir, via a trust.

Yup. Even if we manage to repeal this turkey the Medicaid rolls have been permanently swollen.

So what?

Shouldn’t the taxpayers be reimbursed when it is possible to do so?

Is there anyone left in this country who takes care of themselves? Are there any self-reliant people in this country? We are a country of parasites.

The question isn’t “Who is John Galt? but “Where?”

Yes, but people are not aware of this and by expanding Medicaid this is a scheme to confiscate more of people’s assets.

“In fact, Medicaid does a 5 year look back at the individual’s finances to see if he tried to shelter it or hide it or give it to a heir.”

That’s right. The Medicaid applicant can own no more than $2,000 in assets to qualify for Medicaid nursing home care. Exemptions to the Medicaid rule include a home, plus contents, for the spouse and a vehicle. Trusts may also be set up for a disabled child. Some annuities are also exempt. If a parent plans to give tax-free money gifts ($14,000 per year max) to children, it must be done before the five year look-back rule.

The rapacious fascist federal government wants everything you own.

I’ve never had a problem with it either. Medicaid is welfare!! I worked for MediCal for awhile and back then few people had assets. It was usually just the slacker no good welfare people.
I don’t see much difference than them having to sale their assets to pay for their own care. The only problem I see is there are 9 out of 10 slackers that will never have to pay back a dime. That makes it not quite fair. It is free for some but not for others.

This is not true in my state, the adjacent state, or several others (referring to Expanded Medicaid enrollees).

“Yes, but people are not aware of this and by expanding Medicaid this is a scheme to confiscate more of people’s assets.”

Then people should educate themselves because the forfeiture of assets has been around for many years——if you’ve collected Medicaid after age 55.

If someone goes on Medicaid for a couple of years when they are young it doesn’t apply.

Actually only about 60%. The rest is magically created out of thin air by the fed.
