Somebody smarter than me please answer this: Why, in this day and time, are companies putting everything they own on servers that are on the Internet? Why the heck don’t they have intranets sealed off from the rest of the world?

It’s simple. Servers are online primarily because Sony employees usually need to access company information/emails remotely. i.e at home, while traveling while on their phone or laptop. Potential security risk is dealt with via authentiation keys, which work ...most of the time.
