How is that scenario false? Republicans wouldn't be locked into voting for the Republican candidate. And I guarantee if someone like Gowdy was the Republican candidate, there would be at least consideration by many Republicans to vote for Pelosi over him. The question is: would they actually do it? Given the behavior of the GOPe over the last 40 years or so, I wouldn't assume anything.
