School Takes Away Blind Boy's Cane as Punishment for Acting Up Dec 18, 2014 By SYDNEY LUPKIN

PHOTO: 8-year-old Dakota Nafzinger, who was born without eyes, had his cane taken away and replaced with a pool noodle by the North Kansas City School District on Dec. 15, 2014.

A school took away an 8-year-old blind boy's cane as punishment for acting up and replaced it with a pool noodle, his father told ABC News today.

Dakota Nafzinger, who was born with no eyes, was listening to his music on the school bus when the driver took it away from him, his father, Donald Nafzinger said. Dakota often taps his cane to the music, but this time, his father said he threw it in the air. Nafzinger said school officials told him they thought Dakota was getting violent.

Then they gave Dakota a foam pool noodle in its place and sent him home with it, Nafzinger said.

"It is his eyes," Nafzinger, 35, told ABC News. "He said he was upset because he that's something he needs to get around with."

I always enjoyed Rod Serling’s “Twilight Zone.” I didn’t always “get” them but I faithfully watched them

I had a 5 year old kid maliciously come at me with a kitchen knife.

I whooped the crap out of that kid.

They SURE do.
They SHOULD have made him listen to ETHEL MERMAN singing: "There's NO business like SHOW business" 100 times.

Maybe they should just re-arrange the furniture..

or leave a plunger in the toilet… or glue door knobs to the wall

That’ll show him

At first, I thought this may be an example of cruelty or neglect, but I don’t see it that way now. Reads to me that the blind kid was whacking other children with his cane. Disabled kids with poor control issues are quite capable of turning basic objects into weapons when frustrated.

I say, they acted correctly. If one of my kids was in that class, and the teacher did nothing while the blind child smacked someone in the head, the school would be liable. This child may need a Teacher’s Aide to stay with him during certain school hours where there is a lot of interaction. I have done this sort of work.

It is obvious the child has anger issues, and the other children have to be considered.

I think it is a good call.

Don’t get me started. I have an aunt who is blind. She is about 20 years older then me. I can tell you so many stories about how we played gags on her growing up. She was a trooper through it all though, I feel pretty guilty about it now. She still laughs about some of the stuff to this day

Kid needs a cane to navigate, that does not give him the right to go whopping on people with it.

They gave him a soft curb feeler, till they could sort his emotions out.
