In his first-ever media interview, the military chaplain who was punished for making references to the Bible during a suicide-prevention seminar last month says he was simply doing his job.

“What I had tried to communicate with my audience is that depression can be conquered, depression can be overcome, and there are a myriad of ways of dealing with depression,” the chaplain, Capt. Joe Lawhorn, told The Daily Signal in a Skype interview.

“In this particular case,” Lawhorn explained, “I had struggled myself personally with the issue at hand I was teaching.”

The God of the universe will have no one, or no thing put before Him. We serve a jealous God of ultimate justice.

It just boggles the mind. Would they expect a dentist to not reference his area of expertise? Do they really expect a CHAPLIN to ignore the very topic they hired him to teach/utilize? I guess he's supposed to just hand out lollipops.

Funny you should mention lollipops. Several years ago, there was a roadside rest area we dubbed lollipop park - because it was a known gay hang out.

During my final years in the Army, 2009-2011, all we heard was suicide prevention.

None of the preventive measures, interventions, scenarios, or battle buddy stuff mentioned the role of the spiritual. Not one.

Punishing a chaplain for quoting the Bible? That’s a new low. Glad I’m retired.

You make a good point about the ignoring of the spiritual.
I got out in `09.
