On Wednesday Barack Obama thanked Pope Francis for playing a key role finalizing a deal between the US and Cuba.

Pope Francis is now set on closing Gitmo.
World Net Daily reported:

Having helped broker the agreement to normalize relations between the United States and communist Cuba, Pope Francis plans next to turn his attention to closing the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, a goal he shares with President Obama.

In a meeting last week at the Vatican with Secretary of State John Kerry, the Vatican secretary of state, Pietro Parolin, second in authority to the pope, offered to assist U.S. efforts to close the facility for terrorism suspects.

Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said the Vatican stood ready “to help find adequate humanitarian solutions through our international contacts” to help place current detainees,” Agence France-Presse reported.

The White House said Wednesday that the re-establishment of U.S. relations with Cuba after more than five decades came after Pope Francis and Obama discussed Cuba at their most recent meeting, which was followed by a Vatican-hosted meeting between U.S. and Cuban officials, the White House told reporters Wednesday.

The White House believes the normalizing of diplomatic relations with the island nation would not have happened without the involvement of Pope Francis, the first Catholic pontiff from Latin America.

The pope seeks a humanitarian solution for Gitmo.

As many as 20 to 30 former Guantanamo Bay detainees are suspected of having joined forces with the Islamic State.

ISIS has obliterated the Catholic community in Iraq and beheaded Christian children. ISIS also threatened Pope Francis in August.

As a Catholic I keep having to remind myself that this is a flawed man elected by other flawed men, sinners all.

Pope Francis is a willing tool of satan. No other explanation makes sense.

Sadly, I must agree. I think some of the other posters who are calling him "foolish" underestimate the pope's evil intentions. He is the obama of the Church (and I say this as a RC).

Pope = Who runs Bartertown. Maybe he should concentrate on the Christians being slaughtered by Islam and stay out of America's problems with Cuba.

Okay. Go ahead and close it, your holier-than-thou-ness.

You WILL, of course, invite all the current detainees to live with you at the Vatican, right?

No one in Argentina appears to have the slightest clue about basic economics. Hard to really blame him based on where he comes from.

All Pope Francis seems to care about is putting an end to suffering.

I disagree. How does advocating the release of terrorists upon the world help put an end to suffering?

Thanks, that’s my only consolation as well. I was originally going to say he should stick to religion, but he’s doing that so badly and crazily too that maybe messing in world affairs will keep him from destroying the Church.

Kind of hard to go somewhere that doesn’t exist.

The Pope wants an easy win,not a fight that goes on for generations.

I'll betcha that Pope Francis will be the next marxist to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (maybe co-sharing it with Angelina Jolie).

If he believes that closing Gitmo would help end suffering, why stop there? Why not empty all the murderers, rapists, drug dealers, etc. from all prisons?

Does he not believe in recidivism?

Dear Pope Francis,

Please turn your attention to the Christians being persecuted, tortured, raped, murdered and driven from their homes in the Islamic countries instead of advocating for the men and religion responsible for these atrocities!

The meddlesome pope can wear his costume elsewhere and get off the stage

I wonder if he knows his costume includes a hat (mitre) of dubious pagan origins.

Was he into the Communist endorsed “liberation theology” which so many South American Catholic priests were pushing in the 60’s & 70’s??
