St. Joseph County considering tighter restrictions on abortion providers

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY -

A proposed ordinance could tighten restrictions on abortion providers in St. Joseph County. The ordinance could require abortion doctors to be able to admit patients to the hospital if there is a procedure complication.

State law requires a doctor who performs abortions to have an admitting doctor on his staff; but this ordinance would toughen standards. It requires the doctor who performs the abortion to be able to admit his or her own patients to the hospital.

"I think every member of the council should be concerned about patient health," says co-author and councilman Dan Herbster.

The council decided to leave the ordinance in the committee level - meaning they will continue to discuss the issue until the next meeting in January.

"We're still keeping it in the committee to take a look at possible amendments and other concerns that have been expressed," says Herbster.

I am assuming they mean St. Joseph County, Michigan and not Indiana.

One would have to support this if one were serious about "safe, legal, and rare."

Most of the news in that area comes out of the South Bend station. There isn’t a big enough town in that part of the state to keep a local station going.

Looks like it. I had to do a search of Dan Herbster to find him in Indiana.

I believe St Joseph county Indiana and St Joesph county Michigan share at least part of a border.

I did a search of the TV station reporting the news and it came up a Michigan station. Am I correct in that?

Yea if it’s close to Michigan remember that women do often travel out of state to have abortions. Was one of the things Tennessee was harping about. They did not like being knows as an abortion capitol of the east coast.

So this could very well affect the women in Michigan. (in a positive way)

I’m all for it ,, there aren’t too many abortionists that can get admitting privs. ,, reduce the suppliers ,, raise the cost ,, reduce the number of sales..

Squeeze them hard and then squeeze them harder.. that’s the way to win..

They want safe legal and rare ... lets give them safe(er) and help with the rare part.
