Sony Frees Theaters to Skip Film ‘The Interview’ Amid Hacker Threat

Decision Comes After Threats of Physical Attacks Around Dec. 25 Opening of Seth Rogen Comedy

Updated Dec. 16, 2014 9:03 p.m. ET

Sony Pictures executives will let theater operators decide whether or not to play its forthcoming comedy film “The Interview” after threats of physical attacks surfaced on Tuesday, said a person with knowledge of Sony’s plans.

The decision came after the same people purporting to have carried out a devastating cyber attack on the movie studio threatened to escalate to physical terrorism surrounding the planned Dec. 25 opening of the Seth Rogen comedy.

Such a move—only nine days before a movie opens—is unprecedented in recent Hollywood history and illustrates the stakes in the ongoing attacks on the Sony Corp. unit. Typically, studios and major theater chains work out plans on where and when a film will play months in advance and those plans can’t be changed once a studio is in the midst of a big marketing campaign.

However, after the new threat surfaced Tuesday, Sony was under pressure from theaters particularly for cinemas located in malls and other crowded areas, the person said.

“We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places ‘The Interview’ be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to,” read a message purportedly from the same people who hacked Sony three weeks ago. “Remember the 11th of September 2001.”

Typical bold-faced N. Korea-style terror tactics. On the verge of working. They bring to the world what they used to do locally, in and around Korean Peninsula.

Too bad the movie isn’t true.

Did anybody from Seth Rogan to the top dog at Sony ever stop to think the idea for this movie through?

SONY should just send it right to Netflix for worldwide viewing.

I am sure that, whatever happens at movie theaters, the movie will be eventually seen by billions of people, including millions in N. Korea. It could become a global sensation a la "Gangnam Style," a viral Internet smash hit.

A James Bond movie about N. Korea, "Die Another Day," was said to be a run-away hit in N. Korea after it was released back in 2002.

Once the film has it’s initial run, Sony should distribute it free on Netlix and Amazon — just out of spite.

A couple of BLU-114/b munitions will take care of what little pathetic power grid they have and cease the cyber attacks.

They should just release it on You Tube. Let the whole world see it.

Yup.

This is a huge victory for the forces of fascism and terror. Don’t think other countries aren’t taking notice.

This is Hollywood on the receiving end of “Shock and Awe”.

They're losing millions at it is. The hackers made off with 4 un-released films and have sent them out to be pirated. The data they stole is also very very damaging.

That being the case, Sony should just flood the market with these movies. Limit the amount of money the hackers will make off of the stolen movies.

Perhaps we Christians should learn from this and employ similar methods whenever anyone says anything against Christians.
