Where and for what purposes does your permit entitle you to carry and use a handgun? Is self-defence a lawful reason to possess a handgun? What must you do with the gun when you are not using it?

I can carry it almost anywhere that isn't considered a protected building (like a Court or Parliament House).

Is self-defence a lawful reason to possess a handgun?

Not by itself, no. But being a member of a pistol club (for example) is, and if you have a firearm, and you are exercising your common law right of self defence, then you may use a firearm if you have reasonable grounds to believe that you or another person is in danger of death or serious injury.

What must you do with the gun when you are not using it?

Any firearm not in active use or control, must be locked unloaded in a safe. And, yes, that is a problem is certain circumstances.

Clinton legacy: he never got Osama (OBL). I actually remeber the end of Bill Clinton’s presidency. A lot could’ve happened in those yrs but very quietly. More later..

To be honest from what I learnt about this bastard he had no business to stay in Australia and to be a free man.
He actually had to be hanged before incident.

All of those could be argued that they are infringements of the second amendment. They are too.

I should be able to walk into any building armed, go anywhere armed, as long as I am not hurting anyone.

The only servants in America should be all of our elected officials and their appointees. The public should not answer to them. They should answer to us.

Shall not be infringed is very clear. Anyone who says it isn’t is a liar. Yes, the times have changed, but people have not. Look at the American Frontier. Every man carried a weapon, if he didn’t he was mocked and ran out of town. People solved their problems like men, and if someone did harm they paid. Now up is down, and if you carry a weapon within your rights and you aren’t hurting anyone, you get mocked and run out of town or worse imprisoned for years.

If every man was armed these days, 99% of the population are polite, and would never use their weapons preemptively or to rob or kill. Therefore it stands to reason, if 90% of men went armed into a courthouse not abusing their right, what chance is there of a psycho going in there and trying to kill the judge, a witness, a prosecutor, or even a suspect? Very very little, because they know they’ll be blown away before they fired the second shot.

Every law restricting the second amendment is there to harm us, brainwash us, make us think guns aren’t necessary, when that happens the people with guns are in authority....IE the police, the government, the criminals. Not the just. I believe this has all been planned. Not even a baby step at a time, a baby step in the direction of tyranny every few years and one day we will wake up and realize the truth.

That everyone should be armed, because even some of our “protectors” are corrupt as the most vile criminals, their position does not make them exempt from human nature. Yet they are the only people that can handle guns responsibly? Yea.....BS.

Any law restricting where I can carry a loaded weapon in America is unconstitutional. Which means....America is a tyrannical state with freedom for a front.

I really thought it was much more restrictive.
In the situation you describe, would you need to be doing something related to the club (coming or going, club business, etc) for the law to look favourably on your use of the weapon? I mean that if you just went somewhere with a gun, some public place, and you ended up having to use it, how would that be viewed by the law?

If police wanted to make a fuss about it, they could probably make things uncomfortable for you in such a case, but in practice, I've never heard of that happening, and it would bring up a lot of other issues.

I mean that if you just went somewhere with a gun, some public place, and you ended up having to use it, how would that be viewed by the law?

Provided your use was justified (that is, that the threat was real), there wouldn't be a problem. If your use wasn't justified, I suspect they might try and use it against you, but you'd have much greater legal problems.

Where it would get you in trouble is if somebody went to a bar looking for somebody they were having an argument with and then shot them - they might be asked some very difficult questions about whether they were carrying the weapon with the deliberate intent of using it, rather than just happened to be carrying it when a situation developed they were not anticipating. But exactly the same situation could apply if you walked in carrying a golf club without any obvious reason it was on your person. In such a case, it could wind up a matter for a jury to decide whether the circumstances were reasonable or not.

OK, thanks for your replies. I’m quite surprised, that’s not at all what I thought the situation was.

Correct post. I’ve told people this over and over again. Police hate to storm in to a situation where they know there is a shotgun. Fact.

I have known too many who ended their own lives with a twelve gauge. I don’t recommend suicide but if you insist on killing yourself that is the way. You can’t feel pain when your brain is scattered around the area.

Meanwhile I hear CNN was twisting this into another reason Americans need to ban guns altogether.

We knew that was coming. CNN wants to turn the whole country into Sandy Hook.

As we all know here, had several of the people there been CC, it is pretty likely this would have been stopped very early on.
