I really do think you are confused about the history of these terms.

Assault rifle is the older term. It was simply a technical term for the common type of military weapon that developed during and after WWII.

“Assault weapon” in the sense it is (mis)used today probably goes back no farther than the mid-80s.

I hope you can accept a wiki reference without having a fit.

“The article mentions only one rifle being found, but the photo shows two, in addition to a large quantity of ammo. I’m wondering if the photo is of the woman’s weapons, or is a stock photo from some other story having nothing to do with the woman. To me, “armed to the teeth” does not apply to ONE rifle.”

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, but not to the teeth, shall not be infringed.

I won’t have a fit :-). It was a technical term but like so many other word has been twisted by the left - gay, liberal, pro-choice, progressive, and the lit goes on, and on.
The clerk at the Bass Pro Shop today tried to sell me an “assault” type shotgun. I had to correct him on the spot. I was looking for a pump shotgun that my wife could handle in a pinch because my “assault” Saiga turned out to be a bit much for her t handle. The sales clerk was referring to a semi shotgun.
Anyway, thank you for the stimulating discussion.

My argument was purely linguistic, about the meaning of a term.

I quite agree the terms are twisted, particularly in the case of “assault weapon.” That term is so vague every agency or state defines it differently. Often it means little more than “scary looking gun.”

The term “assault shotgun” is sometimes used for tactical shotguns.

That what the Saiga is, a tactical 12 ga shot gun, based on AK47 with a 5 and 10 rd magazine. I thought that it would kick less because it uses some of the gasses to cycle but it kicks like a mule, a lot more than a regular 12 ga pump action. I guess in a really hairy situation the adrenaline would kick in and you wouldn’t worry too much about the recoil but a clay gun it is not.

They sure do. There is a switch to shoot either 2 3/4 or 3 in. shells but the rifle won’t cycle with some of the lighter loads but duck loads and heavier work just fine. Again, it is not for fun shoots, strictly for defense but the cool factor is great.

"However, ‘bullet’ has become an accepted term for cartridges when one is not required to be technically correct."

Accepted by whom? Other uneducated or ill-informed folks that also believe if the "F" word is used often enough that it will become acceptable in civil society?

"...required..."? You should rise above bastardizing our language because of laziness or the inability to be articulate. Hopefully you are not raising children with such low standards.

“You and I” means “taxpayers” in general. None of the malefactors pay - they don’t miss a lick.

If my friend carelessly refers to ammunition as bullets, I don’t go out of my way to embarrass him in front of his peers by correcting him on a technical point when his usage of the term is so common.

If the bullies are not fired this time, they will misbehave and cause financial loss in the future. Sooner or later counties and towns will realize it is too expensive to protect and employ bullies. Keep suing. Go for all the money you can possibly get when your rights are violated.

From what the cops said to the innocent woman about her being a “tea bagger” and “right winger” as an excuse for abusing her rights, they are leftists. Leftists are lawless so why would they care about murder, rape, theft, etc.

dear dark,

“Recall the Albany sheriff deputy who slapped a guy, stole his keys, and illegally searched his vehicle?
Not a peep about that one since.”

Yes, not a peep.
Now, THIS case just happened to be on LONG ISLAND, where that bat-brain widow/congresswoman who lost her husband to the Long Island Train shooter Colin Ferguson, went ape about anything concerning guns, remember?

Yup.

Albany sheriff went nuts over having seen a recently legally purchased rifle in the vehicle.

Here, the cops bullied a lawful owner AND military supporter, maliciously persecuted and prosecuted her.
All over, once again, a lawfully owned firearm.

At least here there is word of a good outcome.
I still haven’t heard a peep about the Albany sheriff.
