Read the book when it first came out, and more than once I was brought to tears by the sufferings he and the rest of the POW’s went through. What an amazing man. Can’t wait to see the movie.

After The Passion, I decided to avoid movies with torture in them.

It was explained to me that the Japanese are a vengeful people. After the war, the people who were guilty of torture were convinced their victims would come after them...if they escaped the war crimes tribunals.

I read the book. It's inspiring and in many places brutal. I've read WW2 history since I was twelve and I'm more than familiar with the unbelievable brutality and cruelty that was the hallmark of the Imperial Japanese Army. Often it was cruelty for it's own sake as the Japanese of that time were among the most racist people on Earth. Some 36% of Allied prisoners died in Japanese captivity, most of them through deliberate neglect, torture and starvation. And today Japan still refuses to accept it's guilt for these crimes and even for their part in starting the war. The world always gets weepy on the anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. It never gets weepy on December 7th. though.

The Japanese officer who was in command to the Bataan Death March survived the war and was never punished. He later served in the Japanese parliament and died of natural causes at a ripe old age. After the Japanese announced their surrender they had about two weeks to burn and destroy evidence before the allied occupation forces arrived.

My daughter was watching some movie in school about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Lots of conversations with older Japanese that had survived.

They did a segment talking with high school students and asking them about the dates the bombs were dropped, what significant things ended the war, etc. Most of them had no clue. I had previously told them about how the Japanese didn’t talk about their brutality, but I was surprised they didn’t teach about the atomic bombs. Perhaps that was a loss of face for them. Or perhaps discussions on the entire war is pretty much stifled as it portrays Japan poorly (their crimes, their loss, etc.)

Local Southern DE connection to the film “Unbroken”.

Grandson plays the part of his grandfather, one of the crew of the B-24 Liberator bomber “Superman”.

Louis Zamperini was one of the crew also. It got pretty shot up, but returned to base, through the heroics of the crew. Superman was then laid up for massive repairs.

Then Zamperini was then assigned to a search and rescue mission plane which then went down at sea, and the story unfolds from there.

Interesting footnote—Superman was known as a “lemon”. They patched it up and then it crashed on a trip to Oahu, killing eight out of the 11 crew members.
