For a long time after the conquest, Christians were a majority in Egypt.
They gradually converted, mostly to get away from financial and legal oppression.
Today’s Egyptians, Muslim and Christian, are largely descended from the Christians conquered by the Muslims, though Muslims are probably more mixed with various invaders.
