Oh and I’m talking like a B737 .....flew the B737 sim and depending on weight landing, speed is between 160 and 135kts but usually best speed is 140kts. Again, do not know what was happening in this accident.

Because you asked, I just checked all the approaches for that airfield. All the initial approach altitudes for there are around 3500 feet. Most pilots I know hardly ever shoot the full procedure unless they are doing so for currency. The final approach altitudes are all at 2200 and 2500.

We are going to have to wait and see.

This first came up as an issue about 30 years ago when developers started building out there because the land was cheap.

I go to church pretty much just down the street and have mixed feelings about it. It was a fun place to take the kids on a Sunday, but this isn’t the first accident there.

The issue is that it is in fact an emergency landing site for the three major airports and after they closed College Park it is one of the last.

I imagine examination of the wreckage will prove or disprove the bird theory. I live in the next town over and drive by there to see friends nearby. Tragic story.

Good afternoon. Saw your moniker and wanted to say Hi. Hope you are doing well.

I heard an audio recording, don't remember where, that the tower was discussing a possible bird strike. Apparently there was a large flock near the runway.

May they R.I.P.

Horrible. A three year old and seven week old infant and their Mom, gone. You never know what day and hour will be your last. RIP

I know someone who had worked with Mr. Gemmell in the past. By accounts, he was a very good man, and I can’t imagine what he is going through, being away from home and finding that this had happened to his family.

There is a ‘go fund me’ site for him:
http://www.gofundme.com/gemmellfamily

But I’ve been wondering something. A donation site like this was also set up for the lady in Ferguson whose bakery was destroyed; and I’ve seen many websites raising funds for people who have suffered tragedies. I’ve always wondered about the tax issues involved. Will the man have to pay taxes on the funds raised, or will he be able to use the total to try and build his life back and make a future for his remaining child?

I think that donations in a case like this should be tax-free to the recipient; but I have no idea of the law.
