Victor Davis Hanson: A large war is looming
The Fresno Bee ^ | December 6, 2014 | Victor Davis Hanson

The world is changing and becoming even more dangerous — in a way we’ve seen before.

In the decade before World War I, the near-100-year European peace that had followed the fall of Napoleon was taken for granted. Yet it abruptly imploded in 1914. Prior little wars in the Balkans had seemed to predict a much larger one on the horizon — and were ignored.

The exhausted Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires were spent forces unable to control nationalist movements in their provinces. The British Empire was fading. Imperial Germany was rising. Czarist Russia was beset with revolutionary rebellion. As power shifted, decline for some nations seemed like opportunity for others.

The same was true in 1939. The tragedy of the Versailles Treaty of 1919 was not that it had been too harsh. In fact, it was far milder than the terms Germany had imposed on a defeated Russia in 1918 or the requirements it had planned for France in 1914.

Instead, Versailles combined the worst of both worlds: harsh language without any means of enforcement.

The subsequent appeasement of Britain and France, the isolationism of the United States, and the collaboration of the Soviet Union with Nazi Germany green-lighted Hitler’s aggression — and another world war.

We are entering a similarly dangerous interlude. Collapsing oil prices — a good thing for most of the world — will make troublemakers like oil-exporting Iran and Russia take even more risks.

There was considerable concern during the war that even with all the industrial activity supporting the war effort that it would all revert to the pre-war depression when the war was over.

Sadly I agree with you. We are not the nation we were even 10 years ago.

HG’s comments in this thread have been nothing but douchebaggery. Again and again, even after he was shown to be wrong.

I see all the derogatory barbs being made here in this thread at humblegunner, and I can see no reason for it. He had made a valid point and asked a valid question... which was answered... yet all you pounce on him like he doesn't belong here. Shame on you all.

Suckup. Fawning all over humblegunner like that. Bend the knee, here comes HG!

I hate people who fawn all over people.

Perhaps if you ask the mods nicely, they will delete this post and spare you further humiliation.

If I begin to sense any humiliation, I'll keep that in mind.

He must shovel a lot of bucks to JRob since he posts a lot of stupid s*** here and gets away with it.

Shouldn't you have pinged Jim to your post, since you were insulting him?

And your assumption is quite untrue.

Next time that you malign someone, ping them.

The fact that his name is in the title makes me want to read it since I know he always have excellent insight.

Love his books on military history, too.

It’s interesting that I can object to something.. and OH NO that’s bad!

Then a dozen or more folks can object to my objection.. and that’s just fine and dandy.

I’m amused.
It haz a funny.

I object to this post.

I objectively object to your objection.

Further, I reject your objection as abject obfuscation.

His name in the title is a reason for me to read the article too!
After my few answers to “HG” and so many others who agreed with me seemed not to reach HG at all, I quit. Later, I was thinking that this was a masterful piece of distraction by HG because there were no comments on the contents of VDH’s article about an upcoming World conflict that will need strong leadership from the USA that has abandoned the idea of America being an exceptional Nation. His post was a perfect “red herring.”
HG ignored many explanations Of why the title was as it was and deflected all attention to his not “getting it.”

Probably because I didn't read it.

Funny how that works.

The thread was about an interesting article (weaker U.S. gives smaller threats the thinking that they can start and win something. Threats like Putin, terrorists, China, etc.).

Then quickly became about Victor Davis Hanson. (If the opinion piece was by Hillary Clinton I would not have clicked on it - so nice to know the author up front.) Which quickly devolved into being all about Humblegunner. (And Laz - jeez - get a room!)
