The Environmental Protection Ministry called the oil spill from the Tran-Israel pipeline in southern Israel one of the worst pollution events in the history of Israel on Thursday and said the clean up will cause landscape damage and could take many months. ...

It is said that the damage is caused by a pipe bursting, and this is vaguely attributed to maintenance work. The oil would be imports, being piped across the country.

The spill is massive - the oil is over a huge area - and the fumes were so toxic and widespread that people were hospitalised as far away as over the border, in Jordan.

There is nothing in any news report about sabotage, but one does wonder.

Obama administration: “Hence, the State of Israel must
1) Cease oppressing the Palestinians
2) Cease all construction of housing in the occupied areas
3) Withdraw to the 1967 borders
4) Allow all Palestinians the immediate right of return to occupied Palestine
5) Emigrate from occupied Palestine or allow themselves to be gassed by returning Palestinians
6) Clean up the mess”

Looks like some oil spilled in a desert.

Yes, but the desert is a nature reserve. The pics are astonishing - rivers and pools of oil. It is said to be 600,000 barrels, or perhaps over a million.

Oh well, with the price of oil down, at least it should be cheap to replace.

The worst oil spill in the world, hands down, occurred in Canada long ago.

It occurred so long ago that the ‘environmentalists’ are suing to stop the cleanup.

The area is know as the Tar Sands.

Missed business opportunity for the Israelis...

They should fence in the area and charge admission to see it.

Gas mask rental is extra.

Sounds like the EPM is about as useful as the EPA.

Isn’t the border of Jordan very close by?

As far as a massive spill, yes it does look quite extensive. I’m not convinced it’s all that bad.

I am reminded that every time there is a spill like this, and some of them make this look like a drop of oil in a barrel, that a short time after it’s over, things return to normal and you’d probably not be able to tell it ever happened.

Thankfully we always have the EPA, the EPM, or some whacked out environmentalist group to go mental on us.

Santa Barbara, CA has oil leaking out of the cliffs by a public beach. The oil is also leaking at a rate of an oil tanker a year in the Santa Barbara channel under the sea. I have been on that beach and you see tar balls. The state has blocked most new drilling in the area that could sop up all that oil.

These spills as messy as they are have been ongoing since oil was created since before dinosaurs. There are creatures that eat this oil and also the sun rays will break down the oil. Man will also clean up the spill as it means money.

Yes, this area is close to Jordan, indeed the latest news stories say that the oil could spill over the border, if it spreads. They are attempting to contain it.

As you say, every oil spill is reported as a unique disaster. However, oil is a natural product, and will naturally dissipate, over time.

This oil spill is now said to be 5 million litres, or more, and the clean up may take years. There is no talk of sabotage, so probably my suspicion is unfounded. It is reported that the pipeline was undergoing maintenance. The engineers doing that work need their heads read, IMO.

Sounds like a lot of oil doesn’t it. It is, but it’s not quite what they’re trying to frame it as being. Note how they list it in liters? While that is a good measure for Europe, it sounds a lot less if you list it in gallons.

5 million liters is 1.25 million gallons.

1.25 million gallons is 3.84 acre feet of oil.

That is a very small amount of oil in the overall scheme of things.

Yes it’s a big mess. No, it’s not that big a deal.

Not trying to give you a hard time at all here.

There is probably good cause to give the engineers a good lecture. I’m not sure exactly what happened.
