Actually the more gas consumed per mile would be the fairest method. Oh gee. That’s what we have now.

Doesn’t allow for electric cars. The main purpose of gas taxes is to pay for road construction and maintenance.

So the “fairest method” is miles x weight. Woudl be a sliding scale, of course, as the relationship between weight and road wear probably isn’t linear.
