What is “affordable housing” when you have no income?
No mention of homeless in the MSM in the past 6 yrs.
Republican assume control of Congress.
Suddenly!
*like*
Awesome, Nully! I recall you telling me of them, both online and while you were here. Thanks for taking care of some strays... *hug*
My take on these “homeless” camps is that they are largely occupied by people who choose to be homeless, or at least people who can’t or won’t hold down a job that would provide them the income to pay for a place to live. Plus many desire to live a lifestyle that would get them evicted from any decent place to live. Towns and cities used to have vagrancy laws that would run these people out of town.
Of course, there are among them people who have mental health issues and should be under care, but in our wisdom we decided that we can’t force crazy people to stay in treatment unless they present a clear danger to themselves or others.
If you have no income, and you otherwise qualify for housing you live rent free and are given a SNAP card, and may even be given a check each month to cover utilities.
A lot of them get disability or retirement funds. Not all are without funds. They just like to panhandle.
Good for you.
Drove over Calaveras and 680 yesterday.
Ughhhh!!!!
Probably 7 large base camps setup on the the north side of the bridge, taking up the sidewalk.
Mentally ill people?
Are the mentally ill so far gone as to not be able to create little tribal clans, gather what they need to survive, including coverings and gear for the seasons.
Right next door to the Solyent Green factory. For some reason there always seems to be vacancies...
"Homeless" is simply the politically correct term for what we used to call the winos, bums and junkies.
When I was a pup, my hometown had shelters run by the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and Lutheran Social Services which took in homeless.
The rules at all of them were simple-- you got a hot meal and bed for the night by following a few simple rules and listening to a self-help sermon. In many cases, they were actually effective, so the government passed rules which made it more difficult for them to operate.
Guns ‘N Roses’ “Welcome To The Jungle” keeps popping in my head every time I hear about this encampment.
