Weekly jobless claims fall to 297,000 as firms reduced planned layoffs

Initial jobless claims fell back below 300,000 last week as companies sharply reduced planned layoffs in November in a positive sign for the labor market ahead of the monthly jobs report.

About 297,000 applied for first-time unemployment benefits, down 17,000 from the previous week's revised level, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The figure, which was in line with analyst expectations, remained above the post-Great Recession low of 266,000 reached in October.

The less-volatile four-week average was 299,000, up 4,750 from the previous week. Economists say weekly claims below 300,000 are a sign of a healthy job market.

Claims had been below 300,000 each week since early September before unexpectedly jumping to 314,000 in the week ended Nov. 22.

"There are no downside risks to the economic outlook in the U.S. if the weekly jobless claims are to be believed," said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at Union Bank in New York.

"The labor market is running full-out and new jobs creation has rarely been better," he said.

“The labor market is running full-out and new jobs creation has rarely been better”

I need to find some charts to believe this.

The numbers are in fact GOING UP compared to several weeks ago.

The numbers were below 270,000 in several of those weeks...

My head is spinning from these three sentences.

Sounds like the argument is being made by cherry picking the range of data being evaluated...statistics...lol

Exactly. After a Republican president takes office in 2017, any new jobless claim numbers above 150,000 will be deemed horrific.

Reduced planned layoffs AFTER the touted CEO meeting with Obama, I presume?

Not in this house. My husband was let go at the end of October. Even with “white privilege” he will have a tough time finding another job at age 64.

Won’t social security and the 401K saved over the years help?

Yes, we can get by, but the increased cost of health insurance is going to be a burden. We also had not planned on the savings we have lasting as long as we will probably need income. We won’t starve, but we won’t be doing much in our “golden” years, that’s for sure. We had planned on my husband working at least until his full retirement age, 66 or 67, maybe longer.
