Key moment for Boehner on immigration
The Hill ^ | 12/01/14 | Scott Wong

When Speaker John Boehner steps before House GOP lawmakers in a private meeting Tuesday, he’ll try to rally his conference to both fight President Obama’s immigration order and stave off another government shutdown.

But the Ohio Republican will also have to contend with another threat: a handful of conservative rebels who have refused to commit to backing the Speaker in a formal vote on the House floor in January.

In a closed-door election last month, Boehner easily won another two years as Speaker. And no one on Capitol Hill believes he will have trouble securing the 218 Republican votes he needs to hang onto his gavel — especially given the GOP’s historic gains at the ballot box in the November midterm elections.

But these conservatives say they’re closely watching how Boehner and his leadership team navigate several prickly issues — particularly a response to Obama’s executive action on immigration — before they decide how to vote in next month’s public roll call.

Any GOP defections would be an embarrassing blow to Boehner just weeks after a wave election that saw Republicans take back the Senate and win at least 246 House seats, the largest GOP majority in more than 80 years.

And public “no” votes for Boehner would evoke memories of two years ago, when a dozen disgruntled Tea Party Republicans either voted against Boehner or abstained from voting in a botched coup attempt that shined the media spotlight on ongoing divisions between the Speaker and the far right.

Obama did Boehner a favor by forcing this before the Speaker election took place.
If Obama and Reid shut down the whole government just to save his annesty they’ll be the first Dems to get their deserved ‘credit’ for shutting the government down, so Boehner has an easy out.
And he can finally do something for the conservatives in the House.

Of course Boehner can always screw up. And after his election he will.

The “far right.”

Apparently it doesn’t take much to qualify as “far” in Mr. Wong’s book.

divisions between the Speaker and the far right.

No, divisions between the establishment and the conservatives that gave the establishment the majority.

> fight President Obama’s immigration order and stave off another government shutdown.

A false choice. All designed to marginalize opposition to capitulation. Boehner is a surrender monkey.

The should be smart enough to know that the last thing the public voted for was Boehner. Many voters wanted change. And Boehner is far from change.

The reason, IMNVHO, that the "Republicans" (Whatever TF they are nowadays) always lose to the Democrats is that in the long-running government movie, the "Republican" is always cast as the amiable loser. Think of the 'character actors" who over the years have made tremendous Hollywood fortunes as the #2 banana.

Boehner and the other GOPe stalwarts have made many millions taking this script very seriously. They always live up to their end of that Devil's Bargain they made many eons ago with the Democrats. No reason not to, really. The Democrats always deliver the swag and as long as the GOPe stays out of the way, they will continue to do so. The rewards for doing what the President and the bureaucracy want, while maintaining a decorous oppositional façade, are enormous. Of course, should a "Republican" get his lines wrong, or step out of line, the President and the bureaucracy can make sure he is immediately pilloried in the MSM.

To a true-believer of the GOPe, what you and I think of as this tremendous electoral victory seems a bit of an embarrassment; a real danger that threatens to FU a great free lunch for the Blessèd.

Boehner and McConnell have done very well as leaders of a captive, pro-forma opposition. They see no reason to change. Neither, so far, has anyone stepped up to make them change. Stand by.

"In a closed-door election last month, Boehner easily won another two years as Speaker."

I'm completely confused about this action. Why does the lame duck outgoing congress have any say about Boehner's speakership for the next two years? The incoming congress is stuck with this idiot, and they don't have any say? Does anybody understand this?

The Democrats gather in strength.

The Republicans are always in disarray, and there’s always one guy out there that will walk up to a microphone and sell the cause out.

Bob Dole did it to Newt at the end of the shutdown.

McCain did it with his gang game.

Boehner will do it now.

All it takes is one well-placed buy on our side, and it’s over.

It’s over.

Kenny Bunk. I agree with your comments. What we used to think of as solid policy as a party, it’s only Conservatives that still do.

The rest are on the Democrats team.
