KRISTOF: Immigration Enriches You and Me
The New York Times ^ | November 21, 2014 | Nicholas Kristof

Posted on 11/29/2014 1:04:54 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

A BOOK, “The Christian Examiner,” warns that “ill-clad and destitute” immigrants are “repulsive to our habits and our tastes.”

A former mayor of New York City cautions that they bring disease, “wretchedness and want” to America. And Harper’s Weekly despairs that these immigrants are “steeped in ignorance” and account for a disproportionate share of criminals.

Boy, those foreigners were threatening — back in the mid-1800s when those statements were made about Irish immigrants.

Once again, the United States is split by vitriolic debates about how to handle immigrants, following President Obama’s executive action to shield millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation. To me, the outrage seems driven by three myths:

Immigrants threaten our way of life.

Many Americans see foreigners moving into their towns, see signs in Spanish, and fret about changes to the traditional fabric of society.

That’s an echo of the anxiety Theodore Roosevelt felt in 1918 when, referring to German and other non-Anglo European immigrants, he declared, “Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country.” That’s an echo of the “yellow peril” scares about Chinese and Japanese immigrants....

Anyone who refuses to acknowledge the difference between legal and illegal immigration is a sociopath/psychopath.

And just because Obola invoked a fraudulent version of "prosecutorial discretion" doesn't mean they magically become legal. It just means that Obola is breaking the law by not enforcing the law.

in the mid-1800s when those statements were made about Irish immigrants . . . in 1918 when, referring to German and other non-Anglo European immigrants . . . That’s an echo of the “yellow peril” scares about Chinese and Japanese immigrants

This is nonsense, and the author knows it. He's trying for propaganda, not reasoned discussion. This reasoning is no different from arguing that there is nothing wrong with rape because sex is great for married couples. The difference - consent - is critical.

Today's illegal aliens have almost nothing in common with the legal Irish, German, and Asian immigrants he mentions. Like most Americans, I approve of legal immigration, when it helps our country. The problem is that illegals, by the nature of their entry into our country, have already proven that they are not law-abiding. The problem is that the number of illegal aliens is far greater than our country can absorb. Perhaps the biggest problem is that the most dangerous enemy America has ever faced approves of flooding our country with illegals. Any patriotic American who is unsure what we should do with illegals just has to look at what Obama wants to do. Allowing them to stay is Obama's goal, which proves that Amnesty is national suicide.

And 150 to 100 hundred years ago, newly arrived immigrants
were not given free housing, free medical care, an EBT card; they were expected to work and if they could not hack it, they packed it and went back to the old country.

Also, we did not knowingly admit drug dealers, convicted felons, and so forth.

More Liberal News-rag misdirection.

The only fact that matters is that illegal aliens are called illegals because they are illegals.

They are nothing more than law breakers here illegally!!!

Regardless of the never ending sob stories in the liberal news-rags, they live among us as law breakers, sucking up taxpayer paid benefits and services intended for citizens.

Will we ever return to being a nation of laws?
Will Uncle Sam return to kick Uncle Sucker out of the government?

Or will we continue on the path to become the welfare department for the unskilled, the unwelcome, the criminals, the diseased and the misfits of the entire world?

As Bill Whittle asked in one of his videos..."where do you live,Mark Zuckrberg?" Of course Zuckerberg could comfortably house about 75 illegals on his 35 acre,95,000 sq ft,75 million dollar compound. But ten bucks says that he doesn't house a single one.

OTOH,Kristoff could probably only house 25 on his modest 25,000 sq foot place.

He talks about how much taxes they pay ($20 to $30 billion a year according to him), but makes no mention of how much they cost in terms of welfare, schools, law enforcement, etc.

You know that comes to a lot more than $30 billion a year.

Well, NicolASS, they probably do enrich you, because you get paid by your leftist masters to spout this drivel / propaganda more than enough to make up for what the government takes out in taxes to provide for illegal aliens needs.

But for normal people just trying to make a working class living, the illegal aliens cost a hell of a lot more than whatever slight benefits they might possibly bring.

That is a false statement. The issue is not immigration or immigrants. Its ILLEGAL imigrants, its the invasion, its the effort to secure future votes by the Democrat party by giving illegal immigrants citizenship, these are the issues.......

Bears Repeating.
The problem with our immigration system is that no one will obey the laws nor enforce the laws. Supposedly we give them new laws and they WILL be?? Do I have ‘STUPID’ printed on my forehead.

There’s just too much BS in that article to quote one thing and comment on it.

Mandatory quote about legal immigrants in the 19th century—check.

Mandatory mention of American Indians being the only REAL Americans—check.

Mandatory mention of the $100B in social security payments—check.

Ooh, here’s something new. The author’s ancestors were “almost” illegals, but they got in legally. The last time I test drove a car, I was ‘almost” a car thief, but I decided to buy the car. So, let’s legalize grand theft auto.
