New Jersey’s sales tax is one of the highest in the nation, at 7 percent, behind only California’s 7.95 percent sales tax.

Huh? It's actually cheaper than NYC, which if 8.875%, and (unless they've changed it in the past few years) it doesn't apply to clothing in NJ.

True, food (not restaurants) and clothing are exempt from the sales tax.

They’re talking about state sales tax. Municipal or county tax added on top of that is another matter.

It's also cheaper then what I pay here in Texas (8.25% total), but my guess is they are only comparing state rates, and not including city/county add-ons. TX itself is only 6.25%.
