HUH????? How do you square THAT with being conservative? Not allow him? Wow.
Hmm, substitute black thugs vs white cops/white hispanics with your inner city vs country people.
If a doctor can’t understand that guns can’t jump off the table, aim and pull their own triggers, then they don’t have much common sense and don’t deserve my vote.
There's a lot more vetting that goes on here than in the republican mainstream, that's for sure.
(Then too, there's the moles)
He also thinks police ought to be trained to shoot the legs.
Which tells me he’s never fired a pistol in his life.
Quite frankly, I am tired of this amateur.
He does not impress.
I guess you like surprises. I'm not voting for anyone unless I've got some sort of legislative record to look at. Talent in one field does not necessarily translate into another.
Make that can he deal effectively with WWIII. Remember, the usurper will be sending troops to the Ukraine against Russia in a few weeks. hussein keeps stirring every pot he can find on all fronts.
“BUT really, how important is the office of President to this issue? It’s not like any Republican President, who would only be elected in an election with GOP majorities, is going to actually do anything detrimental to 2A rights.”
Very important, actually. Pro-2nd Amendment presidents can veto legislation that restricts the right to bear arms, can to some extent mitigate the anti-2nd Amendment idiocy coming out of the Federal bureaucratic morass, and can sign legislation that removes restrictions on the right to bear arms. He can also appoint judges that interpret the Constitution in the proper manner, recognizing that individuals have the right to bear arms. That renders the office of the Presidency important.
Also, you might want to reconsider that notion about a Republican president only being elected with Republican majorities- Reagan didn’t have that luxury, after all...
No. I don't think so.
Just like all those Republican congressmen who have stuck by promises to their constituents to uphold the Constitution and preserve our rights.
That’s all nice, but a presidential primary is very much the wrong place for him to do that.
Were you a big Alan Keyes supporter for similar reasons (his race)?
1. Ben Carson isn’t actually running for president. I think it would be premature for him to do so.
2. The 2nd Amendment is non-negotiable.
… but Carson isn’t some Republican official who is preparing to sell out the country. He’s a successful doctor who is taking on a role as a conservative commentator, but he comes from a background of having lived in dangerous cities like Detroit and Baltimore.
Instead of rushing to attack him, it might be better to understand where he’s coming from and educate him.
The “damning” quote that is being circulated shows his confusion about the issue and his attempt to come to grips with it.
“When asked by Glenn Beck if people should be allowed to own semi-automatic weapons, Dr. Benjamin Carson said: “It depends on where you live. I think if you live in the midst of a lot of people, and Im afraid that that semi-automatic weapon is going to fall into the hands of a crazy person, I would rather you not have it ” (Glenn Beck Show, March 1, 2013)
Carson’s comments reflect his life experience. He respects the Bill of Rights, but he has trouble applying it to the everyday reality of a major city where shootings are commonplace. It’s a problem that a lot of urban residents have.
A lot of city dwellers look up from a front page story about three people dead in a gang shooting and have trouble believing that the answer is less gun laws. That doesn’t mean they’re right, but it does mean that they need to be educated. Most of the country still supports the 2nd Amendment, but support is notoriously weak in many cities.
African-Americans tend to support gun control in large numbers. This is an emotional attitude that comes from life experience. It has to be overcome with facts, but it’s hard to convince people who have lived a certain way that their life experience isn’t valid.
Both of these are reasons to reach out to Carson. He doesn’t appear to have his mind firmly made up and is still grappling with the issue. If he actually enters the race or becomes a vocal advocate for gun control, it might be another story, but at this point it would be better to show him why gun control doesn’t work instead of denouncing him loudly for not taking the right position on an issue that he is clearly still uncertain about.
You don’t win over allies when you yell at people who have good intentions, but aren’t fully on board. There’s a big difference between someone like Carson and Crist.
Urging Carson to run for president is premature. Treating him as if he’s already in the race is also premature.
Carson understands the moral and legal principles, but he’s hazier on the social functions. It’s a challenge, but it’s the kind of challenge we need to meet if we’re going to win the war of ideas.
Freepers are not one undifferentiated mass.
Unfortunately, just like liberals, too many of them mean well but IMO aren’t really using their heads when they advocate the likes of Powell, Rice, Cain, Keyes, West, or Carson for president because of their race.
Generally these candidates are not particularly conservative but certainly they haven’t been vetted via an actual, significant voting record, executive political experience, and/or campaigning effectiveness.
Just because some misguided Freepers egg them on doesn’t mean we all have to follow through in encouragement and support—particularly when such a campaign is likely to fragment the conservative primary vote against the GOPe.
I fear the ego is there to do whatever he wants to do.
He might give into leftist pressure like for “common sense” gun control or reverse discrimination. Will he restore the constitution or ride the wave of total police/federal power deeper. He would have to undo a lot of what the Left has done under Obama. Will he look out for the interests of the interest of the US or will he buckle under the never ending demands of globalists. Climate change? Has he read about the bad research and the global control motives behind the movement?
These things, he’ll be pressured to buckle under by international business and leftists.
That is preposterous. He has been a very sincere man. I pray that politics does not change him.
Then he’d better hurry up and start getting himself some political experience at an appropriate level. Taking office for Congress or as a guv in 2017 would see him turning 66 that year. Doable for 2020 (though we of course hope to have an incumbent GOP prez then), but he seems inclined to waste that opportunity on a vanity presidential run in 2016 instead.
Very well said
You are way, way off base. Carson is a proven leader in in one of the world's top hospital and in the broader field of his extremely demanding profession, with international reputation. And there are several white doctors in public life and as past and present presidential hopefuls -- in both parties.
I should not have said “conservative leader.”
I should have said “potential presidential candidate.”
AFAIK, nobody’s ever touted a white physician with zero background in politics for such a candidacy.
