I couldn’t think of a better punishment on the American people for falling away from God than allowing a foreign king to be installed who hates his people. See Samuel, Chronicles and Kings chapters in the Bible. There are many more but those chapters really lay out what happens when people disintegrate into lawlessness because they think they know better than God on how to govern themselves.
