I don't believe Third Army was attacked by the Ardennes offensive forces. They were too far south. I suspect your father was referring to Patton's first attack, which was actually our counterattack.
There is a scene in the movie where Patton is expressing pride in his troops for being able to pull out of an offensive, move X miles and go straight into the attack.
