The Defense Secretary job opening is emerging as a thanks-but-no-thanks opportunity, as some of the top potential prospects have already said they’re not interested in the job.
Within minutes of reports Monday that Secretary Chuck Hagel would resign, the names of Michele Flournoy and Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed emerged as top prospects.
But each made clear by the end of the day that they didn’t want the coveted but high-wire, Cabinet-level post.
The new secretary would indeed step into a difficult and complicated world, with the emergence of the deadly and unpredictable militant group Islamic State, amid Defense Department cuts.
“There’s no question a lot is going on around the world and at the Pentagon,” department spokesman Adm. John Kirby told Fox News on Tuesday.
In addition, there have already been three defense secretaries in Obama’s first six years. And with his administration ending in 2016, the incoming secretary isn’t assured much job security.

No surprise. It’s become clear that Secretary of Defense in this administraion has no discretion and is completely micromanaged by Obama. And when things go wrong the SecDef takes all the blame. It’s a lose/lose situation and not a good resume builder.
Sort of like the situation with the Oakland Raiders. No assistant coach person who wants to be a long term NFL head coach will work for the dysfunctional Raiders. I am sure there is some mediocrity who will eventually take the Sec Def job.
What about John “I served in Viet Nam” Kerry?
He has so much talent and ability (just ask him), that he could serve in both positions and do just as good a job as he is doing now as Secretary of State.

I have no doubt that he is combing over the names of all kinds of ‘firsts’ to nominate, just so that the Senate confirmation process will be abrogated................First GAY SecDef?.......................

The Zero has probably sent out feelers to a lot of people and got no positive responses. It’s taken a long time but 3 of 3 previous secdef’s trashing can’t be overcome. He has screwed himself royally.
