If you don't believe media bias plays a role in how Americans interpret use of force by law enforcement, try this simple test. Do a Google search for "police officer kills unarmed man." I did and I got 179,000 results. Searching "Police officer shoots unarmed man" returned 205,000 results. Finally, I flipped the search around and typed, "unarmed man attacks police officer." I got this message: "No results found."
So does that mean no unarmed men are attacking and seriously injuring officers? Absolutely not.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) says 57,892 law enforcement officers are assaulted each year and 15,483 sustain serious injuries. The most recent FBI "Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted" (LEOKA) report indicates that 80.2% of the assaults against law enforcement in 2012 were committed by unarmed subjects. The 2012 LEOKA report also reveals that unarmed subject attacks are the leading cause of injury for law enforcement officers.
The media's total disregard for these facts in regard to the coverage of the recent Ferguson and Staten Island incidents leads me to conclude that reporters are unaware of the annual NLEOMF and LEOKA reports or read them and ignore them. One conclusion is evidence of unacceptable ignorance. The other is evidence of anti-police bias.
Two federal officers can attest to the bias.
Initial coverage of a 2008 deadly force incident in the U.S. Virgin Islands that involved ATF Special Agent Will Clark suggested Clark's use of deadly force against an unarmed man was unjustified. But what those reports omitted was the fact that Clark intervened to prevent a 300-pound man from fatally battering a woman. Nonetheless, the local and national press minimized the threat of an enraged, irrational 300-pound man charging and swinging a long steel flashlight and focused solely on reporting

Grabbing a cop’s gun is generally an an attempt of trying to stop being an “unarmed man”.
It generally leads to becoming a “dead man”.
Especially when they are hopped up on meth, weed, PCP, or their own adrenaline.
For modern reporters the only arms that matter are firearms.
Saint Swisher didn’t need weapons to threaten and intimidate the store clerk.
And yet the mad barking dog press continues to yap about “unarmed”.
What Grubers are is the lame street media.
The todey show NBC this morning captioned “fowl” weather across the screen.. Just screams their stupidity.
Idiot forget to mention the teeth - full of deadly bacteria. A bite can cripple/kill you.
Even unarmed humans can be a threat. Not every violent person points a gun or holds a knife.
Media fairytales notwithstanding.
A 300 lb man can easily kill a 180 lb man with his hands. This fact of life is what led the first cave man to pick up his first club.
I think, but am not sure, that it was in one of Ayoob’s books.
This guy was attacked by a brute of a guy and in self defense he unloaded his .38 in the guy.
The postmortem showed that every single bullet hit a vital organ and that any one of them could have resulted in his death.
But before he died, he killed the shooter with his bare hands.
A search for “unarmed man attacks” yields 5,190,000 results.
I thought Unarmed Teen Michael Brown was his full name. There isn’t a media story about him that doesn’t start with that. There’s a whole bunch of them named Unarmed Teen knocking out innocent people walking down the street.
She looks like such a sweet and gentle woman who only has her son’s best interest in mind.
Pray America is waking
lest we not forget, the gentle giant committed strong armed robbery and assault with two arms
But because of slavery 150 years ago, it is the duty of every white person to endure a beating by any black who feels the effects of slavery. /sarc
Right, the knockout game is played by unarmed teens. Nobody gets hurt in the knockout game, right?
As a citizen I am under no obligation to BOX anyone! Life is not a stupid Jaun Claude VanDamme movie. You approach me or my loved ones in a threatening manner and I’m putting your brains on the sidewalk. Cops are employed by the citizens and given even more powers in this manner to a degree because we ask them to put themselves in harms way. Why do these retarded morons keep acting as though cops are expected to do kung-fu? IDIOTS!!
It’s a consequence of our advertising-driven culture: people are daily hammered with the message that they can’t do X without product Y (”for the low low price of $Z!”). Oh, sure, they _could_ do X without Y, but outliers don’t count and normal people get a Y to do X. If X = “cause grave harm”, then there must be a product Y involved ... and if someone doesn’t have a Y, then they _couldn’t_possibly_ (well, unlikely enough that cognitive dissonance drives the notion completely away) have done X. Ergo, “unarmed” = “harmless”.
"Any grappling over a semi-automatic is likely to push the slide out of battery. If the slide is out of battery, the gun wont fire. Alternatively, the aggressors hand could lap over the rear of the slide in such a way as to prevent the fall of the hammer (the pistol in question, a Sig 299, employs a hammer to strike a firing pin). If the hammer is blocked, it cannot impact the firing pin, the firing pin cannot impact the primer, and CLICK.
The above applies to ALL shots, whether first or successive. But ALSO in the context of successive shots, if an aggressors hand is over the slide, but not pushing it out of battery, the gun may fire the first round. But with the aggressors hand blocking the ejection port, the just-fired round cannot eject, and a new round is not loaded. Therefore the gun wont fire a successive round until the slide is manually cycled, allowing the fired brass to be ejected, and a new fresh round to be chambered."
Sounds like Wilson encountered both of these scenarios." Andrew, @LawSelfDefense
