This sudden surge in EV-D68 cases is perplexing to the investigative sleuths in the media.
Look to the south and the porous borders!

A further bit of investigation leads to the Virology Journal, which published an article on human enteroviruses in Latin America. They found that these viruses, account for a substantial proportion of respiratory viruses identified in young people influenza-like illness. But not here as, It has been rarely reported in the United States. That is a horrible distortion of the Virology Journal article:
The first sentence is saying that enteroviruses in general (NOT just Enterovirus D-68) "account for a substantial proportion of respiratory viruses identified in young people influenza-like illness." That is not limited to Latin America - in fact, the words preceeding the quote are "In Latin America as in other regions . . ." The fact is, enteroviruses (in general) are common pretty much everywhere, including the U.S. and Canada.
By contrast, the second sentence is talking about EV-D 68 specifically. The D-68 strain is rare in the U.S., as it is rare pretty much everywhere (including Latin America). It's an apples-to-oranges comparison.
