Ferguson businesses torched in overnight protests

Smoke billowed from burned-out buildings and sidewalks were strewn with broken glass Tuesday morning after Ferguson erupted over a grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer in the killing of unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Firefighters were dousing the blackened remains of some businesses and at least one was still ablaze. Some Ferguson stores that weren't burned had smashed display windows, but the streets of the St. Louis suburb were mostly clear.

Monday night's protests were far more destructive than any of those that followed Brown's Aug. 9 death, with more than a dozen businesses badly damaged or destroyed. Authorities reported hearing hundreds of gunshots, which for a time prevented fire crews from fighting the flames.

Yup.

I feel bad for the folks who lost everything.

But the truth of the matter is a community is only as strong as the people who respect law and order, work hard and take pride in it.

That wasn’t evident in Ferguson where people had a chip on their shoulder. The fact they cared more about a thug than about the cop who worked hard to keep them safe speaks volumes about where they are today.

People and their values determine whether communities live or die.

That’s why you buy insurance.

Since firefighters did not or were unable to ameliorate the damage to businesses there may be a war exclusion clause in the policies which covers insurrection.

This just destroyed all growth in Ferguson. It is forever “the riot town”.

The only way to save it is to unincorporate it.

Thanks! That explains why I’ve never seen it covered on a policy. Didn’t think about the reason, I guess.

But I can just hear liberals blame it on racism.

Gee, maybe this will attract some nice grocery stores so the Po Folk won’t live in a “food desert” devoid healthy food for them to buy with their EBT cards.

If what’s said above the pic is true, she’s the kind of person I’d gladly help rebuild through crowdfunding. She did it the right way — the AMERICAN way. She worked hard, saved her money, and opened her dream business.

I can actually feel her pain when I see that picture.

Those business owners, white or black were part of the oppressive white power structure. Because of Slavery, black people shouldn’t have to pay money or work for anything at all. The gummint should just give them unlimited bounty taken from white people’s resources.

Re: 29

LOL! Shooting little doggies even back then...

Is that a picture from a real event? I know they used to have insurrections 'du jour' in France during the 1800s, but the picture looks like America - and it doesn't exactly look like a Civil War settings (although I imagine 'irregulars' were pretty plentiful).

Yup.

I do feel bad for her.

Not that her fellow blacks cared about obeying the law and looking out for their community.

They wanted justice. They got it.

Beyond their deductible, the rates will now go way up. So a business owner will now have to decide if the store should relocate to a safer town.......

Re: Where do the insurance companies get the money to pay all the claims?

This may be why looted and trashed businesses will not be able to reopen in Ferguson. They may not be covered by insurance due to the high risk factor.

...Additionally, the shop owners are concerned the damages done may not be covered by their insurance. I have the best insurance but I heard rumors they may try to play the social unrest card and say that I’m not covered and say that this is a civil unrest and therefore I’m not covered,” Dyan said.

The medical facility owner agreed saying, “Several of these businesses and we checked ours –there’s a cause in it that says there’s no coverage for anything pertaining to a riot act. So any of the damage is coming out of the [business owner].”

She added, “So It’s not enough that we’ve suffered for nine days and lost about 70 percent of the business and can’t pay our rent and can’t get anybody here to help us. So what else can we observe here as small business owners?”

Like I said, those who can leave will leave.

The hardscrabble are doomed to stay and their living standard has just taken a deep plunge.

Not my fault or yours.
