Mostly we avoid politics at the Thanksgiving fetes. They never were arguments so much as an endless and repetitive set of complaints and accusations. "You'd learn something if you asked me what I think instead of telling me what I think" usually put that fire out because they don't really want to know, it might make sense and shake them out of their sense of certainty.

That said, I had an aunt I treasured, an old-line, fire-breathing liberal who was actually up to the contest. We used to savor telling one another we were idiots because neither of us really believed it. What has gone from political discourse these days is that sense of mutual respect. It isn't pleasant without it.
