A popular bike path became the scene of a gruesome murder late Thursday when a life insurance executive was killed while running near her Connecticut home.

Melissa Millan, 54, a triathlete and mother of two, was found stabbed at about 8 p.m. in the Hartford suburb of Simsbury, Conn.

Police have stepped up patrols of the bike path and scoured the area on Saturday, but no suspect has been named and the murder weapon has not been recovered, WFSB reported.

Millan, a senior vice president who had been with MassMutual Financial Group since 2001, was transported to an area hospital, where she died. The medical examiner said Millan was stabbed in the chest.

No one who is not white and upper-middle-class to be found within 20 miles of the spot.

What are we going to do with 80% of Hartford?

When seconds count, the police are minutes away. If they are available at all.

Consider the whitest, safest, most affluent neighborhood you can think of.

Simsbury is whiter, safer and more affluent. Outside of Fairfield County, its probably one the most affluent in CT.

And a knife attack is personal. And nasty. This was someone she knew, or was about something she knew about. I would bet my left testicle that this was NOT random.

Remember several years ago when that doctor’s family was murdered in their home in Cheshire, CT? That’s another well off community. The bad guys were immigrants (from eastern Europe, I think)

There is no universe where Simsbury is more dangerous than Springfield.

Spfld is still #5 on the Most Dangerous small cities in the US. New Haven and Hartford are on the list to fill out the trifecta.

I know they are trying to fit this into the “Dead Banker Meme”, but I am not so sure about this one.

Unless it carried over from another job.

she lived in one but the bike path was used by many including the 1,2 %. There are many of Obamas sons just around the corner

Not too close to that corner. Avon is a 1%er town between Simsbury and Hartford. I'd seen 50+ year old black folks driving Oldsmobile sedans and what not pulled over on Route 44 a couple of decades ago. Simsbury is not quite as tony as Avon, but those who aren't wealthy tend to be dairy farmers, etc.

From someone who lived in CT the first 35 years of his life and installed IT systems in the Avon/Simsbury area, yup on all counts. Of course, crimewise, my pal from high never was caught sucking the gas from the almost empty aerosol whipped cream cans at the Howard Johnson's where he worked.

Cheshire is a different kind of town. Upper-middle class, but not quite Simsbury, and certainly not Westport or Greenwich. It was Lee and Farrah Fawcett-Majors' rich. Not Oprah rich. Ron Pallillo (Horshak) was from Cheshire.

wow,

memories and a vanity my ex’s brother was a VP for Hartford and lived in Simsbury.

Just retired and lives back in the midwest.

Stayed there one early December during the first snow fall. Nice area. Did some training with a woman in Hartford.

She prepared a mexican dinner for us all. Everything had to be bought in cans which was all they had in the local store.

“There is absolutely no public transportation in Simsbury, and the nearest ghetto area is 30 miles away in Hartford.”

There are public roads aren’t there? The thugs know where the money lives, I’m sure. There are no “safe” communities any more.

That being said, it could be a typical murder in a really weird place, or staged to look like a robbery...

You have to consider how isolated this area is, and how big the towns are.

It is about 25 miles to Hartford, and 10 to Bloomfield. In order to get to either place, you have to go ‘over the mountain’ on either 185 or 44. This is a long drive on two-lane roads in the dark.

Anyone who is in any way thuggish-looking will stick out like a sore thumb in Simsbury. I once saw one black guy walking along 10, but you are highly likely to be seen and noticed. There would be no reason for anyone like that to go there at that time.

The bicycle path behind the shopping/restaurant area is quite well-lit, and cars drive by on Iron Horse Boulevard all the time. Many people would have been leaving restaurants like Plan B and Joe Pizza at that hour, so there should have been considerable traffic.

Something very unusual must have happened. It may have been a planned ambush. If it was a sudden affray, the only thing I can think of is a dispute with a hot-tempered Lyrca-clad bicycle rider over the right of way. He would have made a quick escape on his $2000 bicycle, and washed the blood off the knife in his garage.

that’s likely a safe bet because even if she was targeted by an unknown assailant because of her race, that would not be “random”.

By the way, if anyone calls you on your bet, I’d refrain from raising back with your RIGHT testicle. I can be a gutsy poker player at time, but I wouldn’t go as far as THAT “all in”.

IIRC, these trails and paths are becoming favorite spots for criminals to ambush citizens.

See my post below.

Simsbury is isolated by a high mountain ridge populated by black bear and deer. There are only two roads in from Bloomfield and Hartford.

“Where the money lives”, yes, but they don’t carry it around in their pockets any more. It’s all in brokerage accounts and on debit cards.

Criminals smart enough to make elaborate plans to travel long distances would come up with something better than attacking a random jogger.

People who use the path said it is well-lit and there are always people walking or driving by.

“I was very surprised,” said Donna Morris, of Simsbury, who was walking her four-month-old mixed breed dog at dusk Sunday. “I walk here sometimes and I haven’t had a problem.”

The path runs along Iron Horse Boulevard, a divided roadway with plenty of traffic. The memorial was set up less than 20 feet from a popular playground which was filled with children and their parents Sunday afternoon. Behind the playground is a dog park that is also popular. Across the street from the playground is a group of shops.

“It looks like someone would have seen something,” Morris said.
