As the famous story goes, when Ben Franklin left Independence Hall after the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia had a question she wanted answered.
Well Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?
Franklin replied, A republic, if you can keep it.

Mr. Franklin, we now have a democracy, headed by the man who was elected by a majority, who now has neutered the congress and who will soon completely neuter the supreme court.
Not only that, a police matter will soon be decided by people in the streets rather than the rule of law.

I remind my grandchildren of that fact all the time. I need to because they attend public schools.
Franco never allowed elections after overthrowing the communist government in Spain because elections had brought that government, which quickly outlawed the opposition Falange and allowed burnings of churches and land seizures, to power.
