I am afraid to even say the word watermeloncall it by its Japanese name, suika (SOOEY-kah). The written version, 西瓜, literally means "Western gourd."

It's called xigua in Mandarin, pronounced she- gwah. And I always translated 瓜 as melon. But gourd is probably fine, maybe more literally accurate.
