Actually, if the GOP leadership plays this right, the Emperor Obama and the 'RATS will have, in effect, painted themselves into a corner. And Republicans and conservatives need to make sure they don't do anything to help them out of that unpopular corner. Let them twist in the wind and then be hoisted on their own petards.

The new Republican Congress needs to play this with a carefully tuned strategy. And the CURRENT Republican House caucus should definitely NOT agree to an Omnibus or CR of more than three months (till March 2015). Hopefully, they won't relapse into being the Stupid Party as they are wont to do.

What’s wrong with shutting down the government?

Why is it that the Repubs need to tread lightly but Dems do what they want? Sorry, but I don’t agree with this “bring a pillow to a gun fight” approach.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an article written by Noam Scheiber where he hasn’t claimed that the Dems have the Republicans on the defensive, or that the Republicans are about to commit suicide, or that they are in a no-win situation, or that the rabid, crazy conservative base is going to destroy the Republicans’ electability. It rarely comes true. But no matter, his purpose is to make Dems feel good about themselves by talking about how horrible the Republicans have it. He’s basically a cheerleader for the Democrat Party.

Immigration wasn’t a blip on the radar in 2012, and it wasn’t 2014. It is an issue DC loves to lament and is in the lower single digits on the list of issues for voters.

Notice Arizona is still strongly Red, as is Texas. New Mexico is as red as it’s been in modern times. This during than era where the Republicans have grown more bullish on immigration.

Let me understand this...a liberal from The New Republic is offering helpful political advice to conservatives?

If liberals are saying impeachment and a government shut down will hurt conservatives, you can bet that is what they really fear!

When does the EO go into effect? Why kill a short term CR if it won’t fund the EO anyways?

This is so much junk. Republicans must educate or re-educate those Hispanics currently eligible to vote about the fact that retention of any type of illegal aliens will affect them and their children just like non-Hispanic people. Remind them that the rule of law is one leg of the American success story. Remind them that to ignore and rape the rule of law endangers us all. Remind them that to be more “Hispanic” than American is to dirty their own nests. Ceasar Chavez knew that. And a huge percentage of thinking Hispanics know that.

Don’t be fooled Republicans. The good and the true will resonate with all peoples.

Of course The New Republic always has the welfare of the Republican Party at heart.

The only way a shutdown is likely to happen is if the Republicans don't cave in sufficiently to Obama. In that case, Obama will shut down the government and the media will say that the Republicans caused it...like they did a year ago.

I am reminded of the reaction when Nixon refused to spend all the money for a program, the practice of impoundment that was started by Jefferson. The U.S. Supreme Court, in Train v. City of New York, 420 U.S. 35, 95 S. Ct. 839, 43 L. Ed. 2d 1 (1975), ruled that President Nixon could not order the impoundment of substantial amounts of environmental protection funds for a program he vetoed, which had been overridden by Congress. The president cannot frustrate the will of Congress by killing a program through impoundment. Isn’t Obama frustrating the will of Congress by refusing to enforce duly passed laws?

In the wacky world of the leftwing media, a democrat president acting in a blatantly illegal manner always puts republicans in a terrible bind.

Republicans to do something epically stupid in the near term, like shut down the government...."

Our generally worthless Republican 'leaders' should be speaking out daily against this stupid meme that if a Republican House and/or Senate does not give Obama everything he wants in a budget or CR, then Republicans have shut down the government.

That is beyond absurd, but even many Republicans and some talk show hosts have adopted the language of the left on this issue. We won't win any issue until most all Republicans grown a backbone and stop playing along with this lunacy.

Like 2008 and 2012?

This article is so poorly written and so sold out to the meme that Republicans are racists that it it simply is not worth refuting.

It is worth noting in passing, however, that the idea that the nation is substantively behind Obama's amnesty is belied by the recent election. Republicans will do very well on the substance if they keep talking jobs lost to illegal immigrants as well as "procedure." I simply do not believe the recent poll that says that more than 70% of Americans favor the elements of Obama's amnesty but 48% disapprove of the method. Americans are simply not that sophisticated, they don't think in those terms and they have never been enamored of procedure.

I believe they just know their borders are being overrun their jobs, their schools, and their hospitals are being overrun and it must be stopped.
