Lanza's mental issues went untreated by officials who allowed SH shooter's mother to overpower them

Adam Lanza had always been a child in need of help.

At age 3, he was referred to special education after he began to exhibit oddly repetitive behaviors and couldn't socialize like most kids.

By fourth grade, he had been diagnosed with anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and autism.

Yet year after year — as psychiatrists insisted that Lanza should be on treatment and strict medication — his mother Nancy refused to follow through on the requests.

She chalked up her son's behavior to a presumed superior intelligence, seeing him as a gifted student, despite testing done by experts showing he presented average intelligence.

But, as the years went on, the truth became clearer: Adam Lanza was a deeply troubled young man who obsessed over mass killings as he fell deeper into a pit of mental illness while his mother ignored his struggles

These are the findings of a new report by the Office of the Child Advocate in Connecticut, which released on Friday a 114-page dossier about the life of the shooter who massacred 20 children and six adult staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on December 14, 2012.

The report charges that the local school system enabled Nancy Lanza as she accommodated and appeased her son — even as he became more withdrawn socially and exhibited frightening signs of his obsession with murder.

The Office of the Child Advocate says there were missed opportunities to provide more treatment for Lanza.

...

The report adds: 'There were early indications of AL’s preoccupation with violence, depicted by extremely graphic writings that appeared to have been largely unaddressed by schools and possibly by parents.'

Clearly, strict GC laws would have stopped this from happening. /s

Ah, more evidence that parents are stupid and the government should be in charge of raising our children.

Apparently his GE executive father who bugged out of the situation has no responsibility at all.

I get the impression she's your typical ‘Know-it-All’ Liberal educator... (she was a teacher, right?) who knew better than everyone else and was NOT going to follow their advise.

I find that more troubling than the GC angle.

Yep, government rights trump parental rights. That is the theme here.

And when it all went sideways it was somebody else's fault.

It probably is true that the school let the overly-protective, know-it-all, pushy mother make tragically bad decisions against the school’s better advice. However, you know that they are going to draw exactly the wrong lessons from this and use it to enact laws that permit school and government bureaucrats to force kids who aren’t murdering psychos to bend to the government’s will over the protests of their parents.

******************************

She paid a high price for being wrong - tragically, so did a lot of kids/teachers.

But it was the gun’s fault. If his mother didn’t have guns, he would have had to build pipe bombs or something.

Some kids are just plain old bad seed, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

number one....you can't force treatment on someone, and we don't ever, ever want the govt to be able to do that...

number two....evil is still evil....evil is allowed into ones mind and soul....Lanza knew right from wrong...he could function somewhat...

and number three, my aspergers adult dtr could come up with the most obscure trivia question, and generally she's a deep thinker, but ask her what 5 plus 6 is and she'll need to get a calculator...ask her what a quarter after two means, and she has no clue....and then there's a certain monotone of speaking, a certain dwelling on certain subjects, sometimes from grade school.....she is smart too but she is limited..she is not violent..helps around the house.....

Lanza was extremely limited...he was odd....he was antisocial...he dwelled on death and killing....

Mommy should have taken the hard steps to have him committed...

perhaps the divorce centered on Lanza.....probably dad wanted him committed and mom didn't want too....

but give a little room for grace here....its extremely difficult when you have children that are not "right"....only when you have one of those do you exp. the despair.....thankfully, most people learn to deal with it...

There is free speech.

There is hate speech.

THERE is criminal terroristic threat speech.

And the DOJ is fanning the flams.

Always had the impression that the mother resisted admitting how serious her son’s condition was and prevented his being treated or even institutionalized as he condition warranted.
