Congress should not invite Obama to give the State of the Union Address
November 20, 2014 | me

During much of American history, the President informed Congress of the State of the Union in writing. The Constitution does not mandate that the President give a State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress. Even under a normal president, the SOTU is a spectacle that elevates the President above Congress and the Supreme Court, which should not be done. Some Supreme Court justices no longer attend the SOTU, partly for this reason. We don't have a normal president but one who acts like he is king. Congress should simply not invite Obama to give the SOTU before a joint session. He is free to give a speech from another venue.

Democrats will scream that the President is being disrespected. That's the point. Congress should not show deference to a rogue president.

They should sit there and chant “LIAR! LIAR! LIAR!”

Yep ... boo him off the dais (a la the English Parliament) every time he lies ... which will produce a non-stop din from the floor.

Jim, could we move this to the News Forum. I think it'd be a great idea for all of us to call our sinators and reps to not invite obama to the capitol for the state of the union.

He apparently doesn't give a rip about the Constitution. Why should we give him the benefit of speaking before the People's House??

Who really needs a “State of the Union” address when we all know this country is a mess and has been since odumbo took office? I would change the channel so I wouldn’t have to see the lying bastard. I’ll read about our “SOU” right here on FR, Thank You!

Republics cannot become monarchies. While it is impossible to establish an hereditary line from an elected executive, the historic fate of republics is anarchy followed by one-man authoritarian rule.

It always nauseates me when you have starry eyed rinos running up to shake the hand of the president (now a dictator) in the name of comity and bipartisanship.
Call your congressman and senators and ask them not to attend or at least not shake 0bama’s hand.

Within the context of a Republic, both of the terms are synonymous. The Republic neither provides for or recognizes one who acts in the fashion of monarch or despot. To a citizen of that Republic your fine distinctions have no meaning in the face of the activities of one man rule, no matter what his supporters call him or what he calls himself.

No, no, no....THe capitol police have excluse jurisdiction over the capitol grounds and buildings.

Have the Sergent-at-Arms earn his salary by preparing charges of treason, etc. Have Boner order the Capitol police to secrecy, arrest Obastard when he enters the House of Representatives, put him in shackles in the well of the House, and have the State of the Union Show be a reading of the charges. You have the full House there to vote on articles of impeachment, you have the Full Senate there to have a full trial and the SCOTUS there to officiate. Do it live on TV. Convict his ass and send him to Gitmo or better yet, Florence Super-Max Prison.

Biden is there to be sworn in immediately.

I like it.

Have Boehner declare the House to be in closed session, and order the Sergeant at arms to lock the door.

The force of law supports the monarch.

No law, but arbitrary force supports the despot. That is the evolving Obama. It is no minor distinction.

FWIW, my points are from a guy to whom the Framers paid a lot of attention, Montesquieu.

Refusing to extend an invitation to Obama to address the joint session of Congress will probably upset him more than anything else Congress can do. So I’d say go for it. It’s well within the House leadership’s authority.

The usurper is required by the Constitution (to the extent that the Constitution applies to an ineligible enemy of the state) to report on the state of the union. Congress is not required to be present to listen to that evil bigot. I’d be okay with them boycotting or allowing him to speak from another location but not from their building.

All hereditary lines had a beginning, no law but force enabled them. In that way, there is no difference. There is no legitimate line of kings in the western world. That people accepted the divine right of kings to rule over them speaks to a desire for security over freedom. As for Montesquieu, as a Frenchman he should know better considering the history of the monarchy and force in France.

The Speaker of The House has the right to NOT invite the President to address Congress. But, that would require a speaker who has some b*lls; so, it won't be happening. John Boner already said he will not do that because every time the Prez speaks people disagree, even more, with him. I say: "Not so." Keep giving him a "bully pulpit".....the more stupid, uninformed people he can win over. I wish Ted Cruz was the one with the power to make that decision. Ain't we got fun?

0bama craves attention and having a much reduced attendance and virtually no broadcast would be very fitting.

Even if the 4 Major Networks did broadcast the speech, if all of the Pubbies and the SCOTUS didn’t show.....THAT WOULD SEND A POWERFUL MESSAGE!!! Why don’t we start encouraging our Congress persons to boycott the SOTU speech and not give that place of honor to one who really wants to be a Socialist dictator.

I’m e-mailing my Congressman and my only good Senator (Ted Cruz), right now and encourage them to boycott the SOTU Address.

Here’s another reason for boycotting the SOTU Address:

Black Congress members want the Michael Brown and Eric Garner families invited to the address.

There should be a background check for those invited, and I would expect the families of those thugs to fail.
