I tried to read this, but when the author mentioned "Chicago-based prison abolitionist Mariame Kaba" I typed her name into a search engine.

She believes in doing away with prisons and policing. Why? I listened to her give an interview and it makes perfect sense [/sarc].

You see, if you come home and your flat screen is missing and you believe your cousin stole it, then you call your mother to find out where your cousin is. You don't call the police. Within your family, you work out something with your cousin.

We should view people as our cousins and work things out with them rather than imprisoning them for property crimes (I do not have enough imagination today to make this up).

As for dangerous people, well, first of all, not all dangerous people are in prison, anyway.

Some people at corporations produce toxins that kills us, and some people are responsible for the destruction of wealth, and nothing's more dangerous than that, and we haven't put them in prison. So . . . why put anybody who is dangerous in prison?

After all, she has a friend who was in a native village at a time when a native guy went crazy and killed two people. The village got together and decided not to punish the killer because punishment wouldn't help him. He was crazy. You see? And . . . you don't fix violence by calling the most violent, racist people to fix it, and that's what you do when you police people and send them to prisons.

So . . . no prisons, no police, no problem. Understand? And this apparently makes sense to her and to the author of this article.
