After returning back to the States from the Pacific as infantry and then ordnance after WWII ended I wanted to use my GI credits to get a chemical engineering degree. I looked through catalogues of several universities including the mid-west, California and SW USA. By turn of events caused by summer work my schedule locked me into U of Texas or UC Berkeley. By more chance of events again I was limited to UC Berkeley. I had no qualms then about attending Berkeley and have never regretted the education. Those were the days of very good football teams coached by Pappy Waldorf. Those were days that I learned how Cal professors such as Teller, Seaborg, Calvin, Alvarez and many other UC professors were leaders in A-bomb and H-bomb development ahead of the rest of the world. Those were the glory days of UC Berkeley in science and other academics. Those were also the days that nefarious groups such as communists weaseled into the best of USA academic worlds, not only at UC Berkeley but other institutions. I saw UC Berkeley being turned over the years from a university for the USA to a university for the world and it bothered me. However, for me it was and is one of the great universities of the world and as far as I know it still is a most renowned public university at/from it’s core of years ago.
